Product Description Silica sand is used in the bottom of the burn pan of VENTED NATURAL GAS log sets. The gas is dispursed though the sand spreading it around before it is ignited. This gives you more flame action in your gas logs. Replace the sand every few years to keep your flames dancing. DO NOT USE WITH LP LOG SETS. ## Questions & Answers

**Q: Do you need a pan?**
A: Not sure what the need for a pan means? This sand is designed for the bottom of fireplace areas to retain heat and protect the fireplace bottom areas.  A pan is not needed to apply - just pour where needed or designed.  If further question(s) are required, just ask.

**Q: Would you say this sand has close to the consistency of salt?**
A: Hi Alexis ... it's a little coarser than table salt ... but not much.  More like fine sand.  I bought it at the direction of an established gas fireplace maintenance company here in Seattle for my Heatilator brand natural gas fireplace. 
 He recommended it.  Hope this helps.

**Q: what is (roughly) the size of the grains?**
A: Pretty much normal sand - worked well in my fireplace

**Q: is it pure silica? Is it crystalline, is quartz or silica glass beads?**
A: It has the consistency of sand, this meant to be a base layer. This not the decorative glass beads or fire glass that is in some modern gas fireplaces.
