Works great once you figure out how to use it.
I found a few reviews that said the rod broke off almost immediately. I can see how that could happen. It starts to bend greatly if you are trying to go too fast. It is a slow process but is neat and clean unlike using a knife or saw. Then I figured out if you use a sawing action (up and down) while using, it moves quicker and easier. I also turned it when it started to bend a lot in one direction. I hope this helps someone!

Good unit for small projects
This was my first time cutting form fitting spots so this was a good inexpensive tool to dive in with. I would suggest getting comfortable with using it on test pieces before going right to work on your final pieces. Mainly to get a feel for the heat tip and how it reacts with your material. You really want the heat to do the work rather than forcing it through as melting foam with gather on the top and reduce its cutting greatly. I found if I went too fast I would have to clean the tip often. Using a straight edge for longer cuts is helpful. For a first time I think it worked good but had some mistakes. As I got used to how it cuts, I was able to get much better with it. The 2 things that could be improved on are the power plug come out of the unit a little easy and the on/off switch doesn’t have an indicator that it’s on so like someone else posted, I marked the ON position on the switch.

Not worth the hassle
Bought this to trim some styrofoam insulation and less than impressed. This thing does not have enough power to stay hot enough to get through a 4 foot length of material. The hot knife “blade” being a flimsy 1/16 inch metal wire bends as soon as the blade cools slightly. Ended up having to make multiple passes to get through material. Gave up and went back to drywall saw and clean up the mess after. This being the flimsiest option for foam cutter is not worth the cheapness as its basically useless. For anyone wanting to complain about the smell.. what do you expect heating up and my melting polystyrene. It’s going to smell terrible but thats not a defect of any hot knife. I should have spend a few bucks more and got the sturdier version thats better able to maintain heat. Oh well.

Crazy hot
Love this hot wire. Went through the styrofoam like cutting through butter. Crazy hot and fast. Be careful when using, it is HOT and can easily cut off more than you wanted to. No styrofoam is safe in my house anymore, been practicing, practicing and practicing making more complex cuts.

Great especially for price!
Used it to cut foam for my bearded dragons deco. Worked great! Cut like butter!

Will probably work great on small pieces of styrofoam, just not large pieces.
I had some large pieces of styrofoam to break down. This does not work for large pieces. The rod/pole is too flimsy and will bend.it would probably work on smaller pieces just fine. The pole/rod also was all sticky after just cutting through a small amount of the styrofoam. It did not make a mess (no little pieces everywhere that are terrible to get rid of). It did what I wanted just don’t buy for large pieces. I am returning.

Nice for 1st time user.
This was my first hot knife buy and it works as it should. It's very easy to use and was inexpensive. I wish there were some kind of directions being a 1st time user.
