THE Right Tool For The Job - Planting
I saw one of these on Amazon about three months ago. I wanted it. What a boon to planting! But then some confusion arose for me. It only worked with a Hex Bit Drill. What the heck was that? I did a bit of research and found I didn't not possess the required machine. I have two drills but have never needed a high impact driver, and wasn't going to buy one now. So I let go of the idea for a couple of months. Then I bought a lot of Gladioli and Caladium bulbs and decided I did want an auger after all. I looked at my drill and decided it would hold an angular bit adequately and ordered the Sorangeun yellow auger that looked coated and sturdy. When it arrived I tested it in the drill and it seemed to hold firmly. The auger itself is heavy duty and is, in fact, covered with a plastic or heavy paint coating making it easier to clean. So the time came to disturb the earth with it. First up, my wife's new Caladium bed out front. It went into the ground easily setting the soil aside the hole perfectly. What a joy! Then it started to hit what we thought was a root at the base of the tree for these low light plants. The drill groaned but it allowed the 2 – 4 inches depth we needed to plant the bulbs. So far so good. Then came our Glads. There was a prepared bed in the back, designed by the previous owners, waiting for us. In a couple of minutes we discovered the same “barrier” in the back that we encountered in the front. No tree here in full sun area. So I examined the soil only to find a double lawn fiber layer under the entire bed. Happily the auger went straight through it spitting up small pieces of black cloth. I planted the corms around the perimeter. We buried over 45 bulbs that day and it was the easiest thing I'd done in a month. Tops up, 2 – 6 inches deep depending on bulb size (and not one was too big for the resultant 1.6 inch hole). . All thanks to our new Sorangeun Bulb Planting Auger. I'm giving this tool 5 Stars and my highest possible recommendation.

Okay but limited
Better than digging by hand for sure but has its limitations. There is a learning curve to using it. First position your drill against your left hip so when it binds (and it will) you don’t break your wrist. This will go through pretty heavy soil as long as you move it up and down instead of just drilling straight in. The biggest issue is sometimes, no matter how careful you are, it will suddenly dig in and bind. Because the shaft is only 3/8” and 32” long, the first time you bind it’s going to bend a little. Once it’s bent even the slightest there will be a wobble that makes it hard to control. The wobble also causes the drill chuck to loosen. Overall it did okay as a stop gap until my power planter arrived but I would recommend buying one with a shorter shaft and dealing with the ensuing backache.

Great drill attachment for using in the garden
This was exactly what we needed. We wanted to be able to dig holes in the garden without them being BIG holes. We wanted to be able to plant seeds as well, and this has helped provide perfect size and depth to drop them in. Fits multiple drills, we have a lot of them in the garage. These also help turn the dirt over if you have spots in the garden that are too firm.

Avoid if you have soil mixed with small rocks, etc.
My soil is a bit rocky so this auger bit binds a bit. It does say in the instructions to avoid rocky soil so I can't say I didn't realize that. However, I had to do a work around to get it to do the job. It should work fine in garden soil, potting soil, and clay. So, I rated it a 3 star for me.

Great for burying stick fertilizer. I needed a heavy duty drill for packed soil and this drilled the holes quick and easy.

Ya, I know, I could by a stand like normal people would. But this is portable and a quick cheap solution when I want shade. Plus the stand is heavy. I've used my friend's auger bit, one time on the beach, and the umbrella stayed upright the whole weekend. So I'd consider bringing it along the next time I spend time at the beach or camping.
