Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy

This book cites real scientific studies. Lots of them. Expect to learn more than you thought you wanted/needed to know about phosphorylation and metabolic pathways and gene expression etc. etc.Key takeaways:* A large portion of 'conventional wisdom' on hypertrophy is based on studies on animal models (i.e. rats), the elderly, or untrained individuals. Meta-analyses cited in this book show that already resistance-trained people respond *very* differently to exercise. If you've already been lifting for a while, expect to have long-held views challenged!* More dose-response relationships than you would expect are threshold-based vs linear. Meaning: as long as you're getting *enough* of a given macronutrient, micronutrient (vitamin/mineral), or even exercise stimulus, more of that thing doesn't necessarily equate to more gains.* You need to be getting an array of low-rep high-weight and moderate-rep moderate-weight resistance training stimulus to keep climbing. An understanding of periodization over the short, medium and long term is necessary to sustain gains, because as you approach your 'genetic potential' your body will make it harder and harder to pack on muscle.* Apparently low intensity steady-state cardio is just…unequivocally counterproductive for gaining muscle.I'm really glad I read this book and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to take their programming and diet to the next level!

Clear and concise explanation of the science and methodology behind hypertrophy. Brad has further added multiple scientific studies at the end of every chapter along with a summary. It doesn't say "NO, don't do this," but instead goes on to show studies including conflicting ones for the readers to make their own judgement.I've also had books where writers literally fill up the entire book with sample "programs." It's not the case with this book. It's basically chapter after chapter of knowledge that either reinforce what you've learnt and forgotten or keep you up to date with current scientific development with regard to muscle hypertrophy.As a certified personal trainer who's also a physical education teacher, it's hard to find books that speak sense without going into big jargon. This is easy to understand though some further research on your part is required.

As a 54 year old male, I'm not as interested in hypertrophy as I am in maintaining and even improving strength but hoped to gain insight from a highly regarded author. This book reads like an intermediate to advanced textbook, especially on the chemical reactions in the muscles. It is also very practical in terms of understanding movements, loads, volume, frequency and rest and simultaneously supports and debunks decades of gym lore. Very good book. Would have given five stars but the first few chapters were difficult to get through. Need to approach it like a textbook, take notes and reread to fully process and get all the benefit. Not for the casual reader, in my opinion.

Are you into weightlifting or strength training? Do you want to gain muscle but don't know the best place to go? STOP - don't listen to the 'gym gurus,' ignore that instagram 'expert' and BUY. THIS. BOOK. Brad is a well-known researcher, author and speaker in the fitness industry and this book is a culmination of his many, many years of working in exercise science and fitness. This is a technical read but provides very detailed explanations of how muscles adapt to the imposed demands of strength training. As someone who does a lot of writing and blogging for the American Council on Exercise, Brad is one of my go-to resources for scientifically valid information and he should become one of yours too.

This is 1 of 2 books thats needed for Modern Day Muscle Building. VERY IMPORTANT: This is similar to a scientific textbook! Very Very Very technical. Some sentences have 4 different terms you wont understand but I highly recommend this book because unlike all the junk out there, its unbiased and gives every popular study on each aspect of muscle hypertrophy. It even says when their isnt enough evidence to do one thing over another or when to take something with a grain of salt. I HIGHLY recommend everyone buys this hardcopy and read it all the through twice. Once for general grasping and a second time to further comprehend.

This book is exceptional for its “user friendliness”. I’ve read more than a few on this topic but Brad has the gift to explain so you understand without having to read the same sentences 20 times. Highly recommend this book. Plus, attend some seminars he hosts! He’s the greatest.

Excellent book by one of the current leaders in strength development research. Parts of it are a bit too detailed and probably not germane to most. However, overwhelmingly this is an important book for any gym “bro” looking to not to be a gym “bro”.

This is an excellent book! I have a small library and several health and fitness books. I learned new information from this book. It is a little on the academic side, which I like because I am a bio-geek. Summarizes several studies. Probably the most informative book on muscle development that I have ever read. Looking forward to reading future books from Brad Schoenfeld.
