Is the product description wrong? it says that it is suitable for children 6 years and up. this seems strange unless parts are loose or detachable.

I think they just mean that it's better quality than a plastic brand one. Or maybe because it's wood mallots ?? Otherwise I'm not sure why. I got it for 6 year olds who loved it.

The headline reads, it's a "musical toy for toddlers," but the blurb says it's safe for age 6 and up. So which is it?

I'd say both. I bought it for my 10 month old grandson. He is learning colors with it, and counting, as well as enjoying the sounds he can make with it. As he grows, I hope he will learn to play songs on it, as his daddy did on his when he was little! Our grandson also enjoys hearing me play. It has great tone! It is well made, and a bit heavy, so I'd suggest adult supervision depending on the age of the child.
