Can this be used to cover a portable a/c window vent where the exhaust hose goes in?

Yes this could be used to cover the AC exhaust vent, that's a great idea! There is screen inside it to keep critters out. This 5 inch is actually 6 1/2 inches outside diameter and the vent slots are 5in diameter. If your ac hose is 5inch dia. This will work fine, otherwise choose the size of the hose diameter. Depending on the hose mounting plate and how it's attached, you may need to use longer screws.
