Necessary
These heads are necessary for the toothbrush they are designed for. They are well made but expensive for what they are in my opinion hence only 4 stars.

Ineffective Without Friction & Does Not Fit The Toothbrush Well
A Controlled Comparison: Manual vs. Ultrasound I purchased the Emmi-pet 2.0 as a premium upgrade for my two small dogs. Previously, I manually brushed their teeth 4–5 times a week with great success. By switching to this advanced tech, I inadvertently caused their oral health to decline to the point of needing veterinary care. • Veterinary Before: At their annual check prior to using this, my vet confirmed their teeth were excellent and professional cleaning was not necessary. • Veterinary After: After 3 months of using only the Emmi-pet 2.0 (4–5 times a week), both dogs developed thick plaque. In one dog, this hardened into tartar. The same vet confirmed their health had deteriorated so much that scaling under general anaesthetic was now mandatory. ✅ Pros • Silent and Gentle: The zero-vibration, silent operation is excellent for desensitising nervous pets to having objects in their mouths. • Size: These A1 (S2) heads are the correct size for reaching the incisors and tight cheek areas of toy breeds. ❌ Cons • Plaque Build-up Despite Use: Following the manufacturer’s and sales reps' "no scrubbing" instructions led to disappointing results. • Expidited the need for veterinary treatment: my experience was at odds with the manufacturer’s claims the device avoids the need for professional veterinary dental scaling. • Fits poorly: I found that these small brush heads were too tight to fit onto the emmi-pet handle properly, which is frustrating given the high cost of replacements. • Proprietary Toothpaste Costs: The manufacturer and reps insist the system must be used with their own-brand toothpaste to function. Sales reps on online forums even recommend reapplying the paste every time the brush is moved to a different part of the mouth, making the ongoing cost of this system incredibly high. • Fragile Transmission: The company and their reps emphasise that if you use their toothbrush heads to scrub teeth or if a dog chews the brush, the bristles will be damaged and will not effectively transmit the ultrasound waves. Consequently, they must be replaced every 3 months - or even more frequently if the bristles become frayed or damaged. ⚠️ Concerningly, emmi-pet market their device as a way to "reduce the need for veterinary cleanings." This is at odds with official veterinary guidance 🩺🚫: • VOHC standards: The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) emphasises that preventing periodontal disease requires a multi-modal approach, including professional care. Products that truly work are awarded a VOHC Seal after completing rigorous trials: notably this device does not carry a VOHC seal. • RCVS Statement: The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) states that professional exams and cleanings under anaesthetic are the only effective way to tackle oral disease. Advice for Responsible Use •🐾🩺 Prioritise Vet Exams: Use this only for surface maintenance between professional check-ups. • Never assume white teeth mean a healthy mouth; always trust a veterinarian’s clinical diagnosis over a salesperson’s marketing. • 🪥 Add Gentle Brushing: Based on my experience, simply holding the emmi-pet on the teeth is not sufficient. You will need to add a manual brushing motion to effectively remove plaque. You should use a manual toothbrush or a clean cloth for this, given the manufacturer's advice about the effect of bristle damage on ultrasound transmission. • Check the Connection: Be aware that the small heads may not click in as securely as expected. If they are loose, the brush will not reliably transmit ultrasound to the heads. Double-check that the green LED is lit, as the device may not activate if the connection is loose. I recommend that others purchase VOHC-accepted products. They have proven effectiveness in rigorous clinical studies. The emmi-pet does not: • Petsmile Professional Toothpaste and Toothbrush (ASIN: B0988DB9PP) • ProDen PlaqueOff Powder (ASIN: B000QAEQXQ) ❌ The Bottom Line The emmi-pet system has significant limitations. Between the poor fit of the small heads, the expensive toothpaste requirements, and the fact that it allowed tartar to build up on my dogs' teeth, I cannot recommend it as a total solution. It is a supplementary tool at best and should never be used as a reason to forgo professional veterinary dental care.
