Can the ties attached to the shoulder straps really hold the umbrella in place?

I use them for that very purpose. However, the bungee locks do not hold very well, so I doubled them back into themselves where now the bungee is so short that I have to pull it out to stick the umbrella in between my shoulder strap and bungee. This way it holds excellent. The bungee locks are pretty lame though.

Can this attach to a life vest to use while kayaking or paddle boarding?

I think you'd be able to! But it would take some trial and error/practice to be sure it didn't get in the way of your kayak paddle or throw your balance off on AN SUP board. I have also had much better luck keeping this in place with velcro straps used for cable maintenance than I did with the provided ties.

Can it withstand wind?

Mine has handled winds to 10MPH, but you will want to angle it, so as to not have it scoop the wind. I don’t think it will handle much stronger winds, no mater how it is held.

Does the hands free kit work well?

It was a bit tricky, but I used some velcro straps (used for cable management) with great success
