It has done both things well for me so far (I'm a little more than halfway through the book at the moment). The book mentions that this book is understandable for people with no programming knowledge. I would disagree with that and say that the learning curve for such people would be too steep to make this useful. If you are a non-programmer consider reading a programming language book for complete beginners first.
