Amazing value for such a high quality little lens! The lens is lightweight and compact; easy to carry around if you are really active either on a hiking trail or city streets. Works very well for landscapes and street photography, but can work decently well as a wider portrait lens for full body shots. The lens is of cheaper quality, though, being that the housing is made of plastic while some Nikon lenses are metal, but that's entirely fine for such a short, prime lens where it's not as susceptible to accidental damage like a long, zooming telephoto lens. If you don't already have a lens that open wider than F/4 in the neighborhood of 40 mm, then I definitely recommend the lens. It's a great complement especially if you already have the F/4 24 - 70 kit lens.

This Z 40mm f2.0 prime lens is a great value. I find that 40mm on my full-frame Nikon Zf mirrorless camera is a great option for my "walkaround" photography. It's not "wide-angle" it's not "telephoto", it's right in the middle where many photos are taken. It's small and light weight so it's easy to tote around if you want to switch with a wide or tele lens. I bought the standard edition as the SE version was not available at the time. They are the same lens except for the "old-fashioned" look of the SE version. That was not an issue for me. Also the SE model is more expensive. I'm very pleased with the sharpness and clarity of my images. The manual focus ring is smooth and accurate. The build quality is good and everything looks well-assembled. It's a great price and value for the results I'm getting. I'm really glad I bought it.

Love this lens! Build quality it's 2025 economic reality, numbers are tough at nikon so they made a plastic quality for the same market the 50mm f1.8 used to be in 2010 (price it's the same, 50mm cost me 150usd in 2010, that should be around 230usd in 2025) I think the most important feature of this lens is that simplifies photography, it's compact, and you don't have to think about closer zoom at different apertures, you zoom with your feet, and just take pictures. I would really like if it was a liiiittle bit smaller, a little more "mirrorless", what's the point of making the camera smaller and the lens bigger? Yeah, I know, image quality, blah blah... lets be real, nobody takes better pictures because of mirrorless!

This lens has become my "daily driver." It's a great focal length for every day photography. The size and weight are great just for walking around and exploring. The lens is plenty sharp, but I'm not zooming in to 400% to determine a picture's worth. Overall, I have no complaints about this lens. I bought this with the expectation that this would be more of a limited-time lens. However, this is on my Z8 about 80% of the time.

In Argentina we say “ bueno bonito barato” ( BBB) ( good , good looking and cheap). This little lens it’s just that . A small lens with fast aperture. Maybe it’s not a 50 1.8s line lens buts for the price you can’t ask for more. It’s like the 35 1.8 AFS G dx or the 50mm f1.8g AFS for F mount. Lenses that are not so expensive and can do incredible pictures. So if you want to spend not so much money this maybe is perfect for you

Given the price, this and the 28mm f2.8 are the most affordable lenses in Nikon's Z lineup. I prefer the more zoomed-in, compressed and subject-isolating nature of the 40mm, which is a nice compromise between the traditional 35mm and 50mm. You can find plenty of reviews out there detailing all the technical specifications and performance capabilities of this lens, so I'll keep my review brief. I think this makes an excellent walk-around lens, and makes carrying a Z body more fun and laid-back feeling compared to the larger, heavier, more serious and professional S-line lenses (which are great for when you want perfect, pixel-peeping sharpness, better bokeh and very little coma or CA, etc.). This lens holds its own however. The main thing you have to work around in order to get the most out of this little gem is to avoid taking close-up shots with the aperture wide-open, as you will find the result soft, murky and cloudy. If your subject is five feet or less away, stop down to f5.6 to f8.0 (its sweet spot) and your subject will be very satisfyingly sharp and the depth of field still very effective. Save f2 for when your subject is far away enough, preferably using f2.8 if you can for more sharpness.

Small lightweight and helps create great results

1 – L’emballage et la compatibilité J’ai acheté cet objectif NIKKOR Z 40 mm f/2 pour le monter sur mon Nikon Z6 III. Bonne nouvelle : il est compatible avec tous les appareils photo hybrides de la série Nikon Z, qu’ils soient FX ou DX. Cela en fait un objectif polyvalent, que vous pourrez garder si vous changez de boîtier au sein de la gamme. L’objectif arrive bien emballé, avec ses protections, prêt à être fixé. Aucun adaptateur nécessaire, c’est du direct-montage. 2 – Pourquoi ce choix J’avais acheté mon Nikon Z6 III en kit avec le 24-70 mm f/4, qui est un excellent objectif de série S, mais avec deux inconvénients : un poids non négligeable et une ouverture maximale à f/4, qui devient vite limite en basse lumière, par exemple lors des photos de famille en intérieur. Mon usage actuel ne justifiait pas l’achat d’un autre objectif de série S onéreux. J’ai déjà un 70-180 mm pour les longues focales, et je ne voulais pas d’un 35 mm f/1.8, que je trouve un peu trop gros. J’étais même à la limite de chercher un format pancake. 3 – La légèreté et la construction Ce 40 mm m’a convaincu par sa compacité et son poids plume. Oui, il est très léger, et c’est clairement son atout majeur. Certains critiquent la baïonnette en plastique, mais honnêtement, vu son poids, les contraintes mécaniques sont ridicules : ce n’est pas un gros zoom téléobjectif qui risque de casser la monture. Cette légèreté change vraiment la donne : je peux transporter mon appareil presque partout, ce qui est souvent le facteur limitant avec ce type de boîtier. 4 – Qualité d’image et rendu Il ouvre à f/2 et cela suffit largement pour obtenir un beau flou d’arrière-plan. Ce n’est pas le piqué d'une série S, évidemment : il est moins défini que mon 24-70 mm f/4 S. Mais le rendu n’est pas désagréable : il y a même un petit côté old-school, comme si on retrouvait un style “Kodak” adouci, sans pour autant tomber dans le flou mou. Ce côté un peu moins chirurgical donne du caractère à certaines images, plutôt créatif en fait. 5 – En pratique Avec cet objectif, je me surprends à emporter beaucoup plus souvent mon Z6 III. Avant, je pesais toujours le pour et le contre : est-ce que je prends le gros boîtier ou est-ce que je me contente de mon iPhone 15 Pro ? Aujourd’hui, je prends le Nikon presque par réflexe. C’est aussi plaisant de revenir à une focale fixe : cela oblige à bouger, à réfléchir à sa composition, à se replacer physiquement plutôt que de tourner une bague de zoom. 6 – Conclusion Au final, cet objectif a parfaitement rempli sa mission : compact, léger, abordable et assez lumineux pour compléter le 24-70 mm f/4. Je l’ai trouvé à un prix imbattable sur Amazon, ce qui a fini de me convaincre. Bien sûr, ne vous attendez pas à une qualité optique chirurgicale, mais si votre priorité est de transporter votre boîtier partout, de profiter d’une ouverture correcte et de vous remettre au plaisir de la focale fixe tout en bénéficiant des fantastiques performances de toute l'électronique d'un capteur plein format comme le Nikon Z6 III, c’est un excellent choix. Je le recommande sans hésiter !
