Question 1

Does this gel plate work with cheap acrylic paints?...I've read it doesn't.

We do not recommend using acrylic paint with our Gel Plate.   The only exception would be slow-drying acrylics like Golden OPEN.  Because the Speedball Gel Plate is designed to transfer the finest details that printmakers demand, it has a higher durometer than other plates on the market and is just not suited for fast drying acrylic paint.  Damage to the plate can be caused from the acrylic paint film shrinking as it dries.   We highly recommend using our Akua Itaglio Inks on this plate or Fabric Screen Printing Inks (for gel printing on fabric).

Question 2

If the paint dries on the plate will it come off the plate? Or does it stick to the plate and you can only get it off by scraping it off?

Accepted Answer

Because our plates are designed for printmaking, we do not recommend using paint.  If paint is used and has stuck to the plate, careful cleaning steps should be taken.  Gently wipe the plate clean with a baby wipe and follow up with baby oil if necessary. Avoid scraping as this can damage the gel plate.   For best results always use printmaking inks or slow-drying acrylic paint with the Speedball Gel Plates.

Is this a hard or soft surface? What does the title say gel?

The surface is like a hard jello or relating material which is why it is called "gel." It is easy to work on and delivers smooth
prints, with the texture of what was printed. These are great!!

How do you do image transfers of this plate?

We used this plate to roll out our ink in a thin, even layer. Then we placed our carved rubber stamps into the ink before stamping them on paper. You can also use your roller to roll the ink directly on your stencil or stamp. Hope this helps! :)
