Q: What is the advantage of this fence, over the existing fence on the miter saw?

It allows for the measuring device to mount properly for use. I had an earlier version of miter saw and i could not secure it to the original fence. A newer saw and fence may work?

Q: Can a measure shoebase?

Yes but it may require a spacer depending on the width of the shoebase to ensure it remains in contact with the wheel

Q: Does this work with the 12 craftsmen slide miter saw?

Probably, this is not a good answer but I have a generic saw and bought their adapter which was way too thick, ended up making my own mounting plate from a sheet of steel . If your saw is not listed as compatible, don't buy their adapter
