It works, great little machine!!!
I have several of these and they work great. Keep in mind you do need to replace the filters often if you keep them running alot. Clears out odors, dust and keeps the air fresh. Been using them for years. Great little machine!

Great little unit for the price!
I've owned this filter for 3 months now and feel that I can give a fair review. While this is not some super-filter that will eliminate odors or kill molds and bacteria, it's not supposed to be, nor should one expect it to be based on either its description or price. What it *does* is exactly what it is supposed to do: It filters dust and airborne particles from the air. I use it in a room 11x12 that is very dusty and in which we had lots of problems with sneezing and itchy eyes from whatever was circulating around in there. I have removed the front cover twice in three months to check on it. I have on one of those occasions rinsed the crepe filter, as it seemed quite dusty, but have not yet needed to change the HEPA filter. As far as sound is concerned, the low setting is barely audible, the medium setting is still unobtrusive, and the high setting makes what I actually find to be a very pleasant white noise. It helps me sleep better, actually, and helps drown out ambient noise. I am very noise-sensitive and I would not begin to call this unit "loud," and frankly find such remarks puzzling. My unit has gotten no dirtier than anything else in the room. I just dust it off when I dust the room and it looks great. I can't understand many of the complaints in other reviews, as I have simply not found those things to be true, or even if they are (it *is* audible and, well, yes, it attracts dust), they are simply the nature of this type of product. Of course it makes a sound and attracts dust. It's basically a box containing a fan. Even so, it makes more noise than any other fan, and gets no dustier than any other object in the room. If there's an air filter that works by silently releasing magical sprites into the air which seek out airborne particles and transport them to another dimension in with a sparkly wave of their wands, while riding tiny unicorns about and dusting the room for you, I haven't found it. This little unit does exactly what it promises, does it well, and does it for a paltry $3x.xx investment. Great purchase. Get one! *fairies and unicorns not included

Great investment, glad I bought them!
This unit is bigger than I expected, admittedly I did not pay attention to the dimensions on the product page. I was more concerned with how well it worked and if it is going to still be working 6 months from now. Well it definitely works! I have been running one in a second bedroom/office where I smoke, the room is approx 12x12 and if I close the door it will filter every bit of the smoke out of the air but it does not happen immediately. I have the unit across the room from the desk where I smoke so the smoke fills the room before it reaches the filter. I intend to rearrange my desk area to move it closer. I noticed a marked improvement in the air after leaving it on med overnight the first night. The air was, lighter, it seemed easier to take a deep breath, almost natural to do so rather than having to focus on a deep breath. My husband said he couldn't tell a difference except it was a good fan, the room was cooler. Yes it does circulate the air in the room, which is what you want to happen, naturally this is going to cool the air but not so much as to make it uncomfortable and actually I felt that when I placed it under the heating vent with the intake facing the vent it warmed the room by cirulating the heat from the vents better. Wish I could mount this thing directly under the vents on the ceiling. I have ran this one for a week non-stop and still works great, no rattling or strange noises. I do not use the ionic option because I think it's bad to breathe ozone, I was glad this machine allows you to keep that turned off. The fan on high sounds like a box window fan to me, it is a bit loud after a while because its constant sound, my husband said it sounded like a helicopter landing, I dissagree. I like the med setting the best, it works fairly well and clears the room of smoke in about 30-45 minutes and after about an hour or so its as if there was never smoke in the room. Low doesn't seem to do much for short term, I think its good as a maintenance setting or for overnight as it is almost inaudible. I did like it for nightime with room closed up, the air was very fresh and clean in the morning. These are great for a clean fresh smelling home but they do take about an hour to make any difference. Definitely for smaller rooms or close to the source of pollution such as smoke. I bought one for each of my kids and I bought a larger one ( Holmes® HAP726-U True HEPA Allergen Remover for Medium to Large Rooms ) for my husband in our bedroom. he does have allergies and he did say he could breathe better after it ran for just several hours, I have high hopes. One note on the larger unit it definitely makes the room a lot cooler. I tried this unit in our bedroom and my husband said he could not tell any difference in his allergies. That was only one night though and the bedroom was way too big for this untit and the air had never been filtered prior to that so it had a lot going against it. We have a very dusty house thats about 15 years old with the original carpets. 3 large dogs inside and we used to have 2 cats inside about 2 years ago until my husbands allergies just couldn't take them anymore. I honestly feel these were a good investment. I can tell a difference and so can my family. Oh also my daughter and her boyfriend stayed in the spare bedroom and they both reported that they slept very well, even the boyfriend who has trouble sleeping. They both said they didn't wake up all stuffy and coughing like usual. So there was better results in the smaller room where the unti had been running for a week already. Its too early for me to report on the dust and durability but I have confidence this brand will last from all the great reviews I read from several sites. I highly recommend. I also bought the double pack replacement filters when I bought the units.

Excellent little air cleaner ... but be warned!...
I've owned these small Holmes air cleaners for many years. They are very reliable, quiet and efficient. When my older Holmes' motor started to make noises and seemed to be on its last legs, I didn't hesitate to purchase a new one. The latest version is the best of them all. It uses a quality Hepa filter, is extremely quiet at its lowest setting, and it can be used horizontally or vertically. Plus you can't beat the price ... especially the Amazon price. However ... and this is a BIG however ... DO NOT USE THE OZONE-PRODUCING ASPECT OF THIS MACHINE. It's turned on or off by a simple switch on the top. Well, JUST LEAVE IT OFF. DON'T BOTHER WITH IT FOR ONE SECOND. Why? Because the ozone is dangerous to your entire respiratory system, even at low levels. If you want to know more about the dangers of ALL ozone-producing air cleaners, just do a Google search of "Is the ozone from an air cleaner or air purifier harmful?" Then sit back and be shocked by what the EPA and other regulatory bodies have to say about it. Of course, you don't have to take any of it seriously if you don't want to. You can scoff, laugh it off ... whatever. But, I assure you, in time your lungs and nostrils and everything else that's part of your breathing system will go through a noticeable change for the worse and you may even suffer permanent damage. So why is it still legal for these types of machines to be sold and marketed with so much hype? Beats me. What I can tell you for sure is that the claim that the ozone from this machine helps clean the air better than no ozone at all is absolutely bogus. The ozone does nothing to clean the particles. All it does is smell nice and, under the cloak of that pleasant smell, make your throat sore, your nose bleed, your lungs irritated and, if you have asthma, make the asthma even worse. Other than that ... the Holmes is great. SO DON'T TURN ON THAT OZONE SWITCH, OK?

Purchased for electronics workbench
Works well for my intended use. I purchased this to mitigate fumes from soldering and it works great. On the high fan setting the smoke stream from the tip of the soldering iron is visibly pulled into the filter. The best use I've found is for eliminating the fumes from the toaster reflow oven. After a reflow cycle, I set the purifier atop the toaster oven and crack the oven door open. On high setting, the purifier is the perfect size for sucking up all the fumes coming from the oven. With the orange "smoke eliminator" filter, the air leaving the purifier contains no trace of fume or odor. Compared to running the oven without using the fan, after only a couple of reflow cycles, the room will begin to smell from the fumes released by the solder paste and if I work in this environment too long I start getting a headache. Using the purifier as described above, I can run the reflow oven all day without any issues. Caution: My reflow oven was modified internally with rock wool which insulates the oven and prevents the surfaces from getting hot. Placing this fan directly atop an unmodified toaster oven would most likely melt the housing or worse. Ionizer: The ionizer for electronics work MAY be an added benefit. Peering into the fan exhaust, only half of the air stream has ionizer probes. I don't have the equipment to test the effectiveness of the ionizer for ESD mitigation. Orange (smoke) vs Yellow (odor) filters: Holmes marketing isn't doing a great job explaining the difference between these two filters. From the given information, the two filters appear the same. Both include "HEPA Type" in the description. Both include "Baking Soda" in the description. Neither is advertised as "True HEPA". The Orange filter is more expensive than the yellow filter with no discernible justification given in the product page. From the front, both filters appear to be the same. However, physically looking at the filters, the difference becomes apparent when looking at the exhaust side of the filter and when physically handling the filters. The Orange filter includes a standard pleated style filter, whereas the Yellow filter does not. The Yellow filter appears to be a pure carbon and baking soda filter. The Orange filter has a carbon and baking soda layer in front of a pleated filter. The yellow filter may work better at removing odors as it may include more carbon and baking soda. However, the orange filter may work better at removing smaller particles and allergens due to the pleated filter. For my purposes, I'm not sure which is more effective for removing toxic fumes from soldering. So far, I've only used the Orange filter and haven't yet had to open the yellow filter. The orange filter has been proven to work so far, and since I only use the purifier when needed, I haven't yet had to replace the filter. Overall, I think this purifier is too small to purify an entire room. However, for work bench purposes it works great. Use a proper whole room purifier for 24/7 purification and use this when trying to purify a small work area.

Way better than the price implies
Scroll to the bottom and I'll address a couple of things others have mentioned (black dust etc) I can say from personal experience that my allergies are directly proportional to dust in the air, and that having an air filter in the bedroom makes a huge difference especially when I'm sleeping. So, if you've been looking at room air filtration you might be tempted to believe that you'll have to buy some no-name for at least $100 or else it's all super crap, right? Not really. These Holmes filters are pretty good. I've bought three so far. The first one I used for more than 5 years before it was broken through no fault of its own. The second one has been going for a few years in my bedroom, right next to the head of my bed. The third one I just bought (2022) for my office, which has extra dust from the cat box cabinet and from the 3d printer. You can feel them move the air, after running it in a normal-size bedroom for a few hours you'll notice the temperature is a little different (like having a fan running). Even if you keep a clean house, if you live in a hot/dry place like me you'll have dust, constantly. Even more if you have pets. You'll notice that the level of dust settling on things decreases immediately. My hearing isn't perfect, and I like a little white noise when I sleep, so I keep mine on the medium setting next to my side of the bed. My partner didn't have any issues with it from the other side. The quiet setting is pretty quiet; the high power setting is like having a big fan going. Which, let's face it, is what it is. OK so a couple of things that come up in the comments: - It's getting weird black dust on stuff! This is because you have the "ion" setting turned on and your air is dirty as hell. The ion setting makes the extra fine dust in your air stick to surfaces (like the dust filter). If you've got a ton of dust, some of the extra fine stuff IS going to make it through the filter and land right next to it. It will clear up after a while if it's able to knock down the overall dust level in your room, which it should. Put it on a hard surface you can wipe, aim the "exit" side of the fan away from your curtains or whatever. You can also just turn the ion setting off. Also - I wouldn't put it aimed at the metal legs of a desk; if the air is so dusty that you're getting black ion dust you'll also start getting static charges on your desk. Science! - It caught on fire! That's really weird, and hey maybe you got a crazy bad one, but for reals: Did you put it in a cluttered, hoarder corner? Is it getting airflow? Is the filter completely caked in dirt? These things are DEAD SIMPLE - they're just a fan, and in The Year of Our Lord 2022 fan technology is pretty mature.

Nice small air cleaner that packs a real punch!
I love these little air cleaners. I have one in each of our bedrooms. They are small, compact and do a great job cleaning the air. I love that you can set them upright or flat on the ground. I sometimes move it to a different position depending on where I want to place it. It works well either way. There are 3 speeds and we tend to leave it on at the middle settling 24/7. I have it positioned so that it is directly under the heat vents in the ceiling in the bedrooms. It is amazing how dirty the filters get. We have a pretty clean house and I vacuum every other day. We change our furnace filter often but these things really pick up an amazing amount of dirt. I change the filters about once a month and they are almost black. This has a switch for ionization but I leave that turned off because I am not sure what exactly it does or why I would want it. There is a light that comes on to let you know that this switch is turned on. The fan is somewhat loud on high and you can barely hear it on low. I think it honestly does a decent job on low but I keep it on medium because I want it to move the air a little more. I also like the noise for sleeping. Thanks for reading my review Becky Brooks

Hello. I so far have this for 5 years. Still doing a great job. Was wondering if I could take apart to clean inside. Has anyone done this before? Thanks.
