Unless you calibrate the AVR to a reference level, the actual heard volume will not correlate to the display. To calibrate you can either use the auto cal feature with the included microphone or do it yourself with an SPL meter. Once this is done, setting the volume level to 0 (relative mode) or 82 (absolute mode) (see page 117 of the manual) will theoretically get you the same volume that the sound engineers used when they mixed the movie. This is known as "reference volume" and is normally much louder than most people would want.
