Is the clamp secure enough to withstand performing a combat roll before engaging bugs? I don't want to lose my phone in the process.

My 12 yr old has personally thrown mine off staircase with my go pro on it. Everything stayed in place. I suggest combat roll into a one knee approach

How does it know when to start filming or take a photo?

It only holds your phone, you have to start video or take picture yourself. It's essentially just a mount for your phone. Basically you start recording then stalk and shoot the fly.
