They are thicker than expected and not flimsy at all. The sponge feels durable and holds its shape well once installed. Plenty of surface area for filtration and beneficial bacteria, and they do not collapse or compress easily under flow. Overall, solid filter pads that feel like they will last.

I purchased this foam to use in my emperor 450 hang-on-the-back style filter, in conjunction with my media holding baskets and ceramic rings down the main pickup tube tray. Between the ceramic and open cell foam media there is plenty of area for biologic filtration, and in separate sections so you can clean them in waves and not knock out all the beneficial bacteria like when doing them all at the same time. The media does an OK job at trapping the physical debris during its mechanical filtration, however i prefer to throw a smaller cell filter before that i pull out more frequently and wash off to get the bulk of the junk while leaving the larger cell foam to focus more on biological filtration. The last element you are missing from the over-priced cartridge filters is the chemical filtration media included in the cages behind the floss layer. The 400/450 models i own offered cages that could fit behind the filters, which i use on one or both sides to help get some flow over carbon or whatever other media i am running (maybe after a medical treatment or whatever) and when not in use i just slam another wedge of foam in there. The smaller ones i just get a filter bag, throw some of the carbon pellets in there and drop that on top of the foam part for the final stage in the smaller tanks. Overall, its just a hunk of open-cell-foam but with a bit of handy work and an open mind this could save you hundreds on OEM and store brand replacement filters you just throw out once you are done with them. Just google around about making your own fishtank filters and there is a wealth of info - just remember to start simple and expand from there and you will do fine! Cutting the material can be tricky, and the sheet provided is large enough to make a few filters but not huge by any means. I got about 6-8 filters out of the single sheet which ranged from my larger emperor 450/penguin 400s down to some blocks cut for my smaller 10g fluvial filters - even have some in the submerged power-head type filters in the cichlid tank! In addition to the mechanical and bio
