Can you tell me what the length is at the bottom? Looks like it is 43" long (guessing that is the top).

The bottom measures 41" in length and is 18-1/4 wide at the bottom.

Watertight? Can it stay in the bed of a truck during a rain storm?

These are made to be bolted to the bed of trucks or trailers and made of material that will not rust.

How thick is the plastic used in this? how resistant to damage is it? how resistant to weather is it?

The plastic is 1/8 inch thick; the lid is a double layer composit structure, which is sturdy enough to stand on. I have the box bolted down to a bracket on the back bumper of my travel trailer. It carries about 100 pounds of equipment and shows no sign on fatigue after about 5000 miles on the road. Even when driving in very heavy rain, the interior of the box has remained dry.

can it mount security on the back of a truck

well i have mine inside of a rack that slips inside of the reece hitch. the rack i purchased from harbor freight and the reason i got this one (box) is b/c it's size fit perfect into that rack. i used mine on the rear bumper of my travel tralier (rv), and that is where i have an air compressor and tools, etc....i love mine and it is a very rugged made box. i drilled 4 holes in the bottom of my box and then put stove bolts with large heads down thru it and ran a piece of metal with matching drill holls under the rack and then put bolts with locking washers on it to keep it from bouncing around or out. it has 2 well made hasps on it for locks. i love this setup and box. it was shipped to me via fed-x. if you are looking to mount into a truck bed, it would most likely work, just depends on exactly how you want to get into it. i hope this has helped and not bored you.
