Both will convert existing embroidery files to JEF format. When you insert a USB thumb drive and select USB tab on the machines touchscreen, it automatically creates a folder named EMB. In the folder is another folder labeled EMBT. Store your .JEF embroidery files in the EMBT folder. After you have put your file from your computer in the correct folder, Insert USB: Select USB. Select EMB then use the lower left and right arrows to scroll to your file. My machine came with software that reads embroidery files. Sadly the disk was not in the box. I had to request it. It has 50,000 embroidery files. Anything you can imagine is on that disk. I have only been using it for about 2 weeks but love it already. Makes a beautiful stitch right out of the box. Easy to thread. The needle threader is a bit hard to get used to. The instructions in the book do not show enough detail, however, it is something that you can figure out with repetition and by paying attention. The needle threader is not like the one on my Janome Memory Craft 6500 - but it does work well. The 500E comes with 4 hoops, which is REALLY nice. Didnt have to buy those separately. The pre-loaded patterns seem to be nice and stitch out well, although I do not generally use them. My previous machine was not a Janome so I have separate software that I use to convert my purchased patterns. The preloaded fonts are just OK. But again, I have a large library of my own that I generally use.
