OUTSTANDING in almost every respect
I’ve owned my pair of Camel Crown leather sandals for just under two years now and worn them almost continuously for perhaps 16-months in total (I live in Florida, where sandals are worn near year-round). So that said, I can speak to the long-term wearability, as well as the initial fit. Pro: 1. The 3-strap adjustment system allows almost anyone to configure the sandals for their feet. I have moderately wide feet, and many other brands of sandals seem to assume everyone has the classic “C” width. To me, that means I can’t wear a lot of brand products I’d like to try, but the Camel were easy to adjust for comfort and fit. I actually had ordered other brands of sandals before these, but the inability of those brands to handle my wider foot, coupled with Amazon’s return guarantee, meant I was quick to return them and try these. 2. The leather upper straps have taken a beating over the 16-months, but have maintained their appearance quite well. I suspect that is a reflection of using quality leather, rather than manufacturing with cheaper bonded leather or buckskin leather. There is no apparent thinning or wear visible anywhere, so I’m not worried about a strap suddenly breaking and leaving me with only one usable sandal. And finally, the stitching on the leather has held up perfectly, and none of the threads have broken or come loose. 3. The soles of the sandals have worn like iron. In fact, after 16-months of heavy use, they still look almost new with no visible wear patterns. I don’t know if the soles are made by Vibram or one of the other companies who manufacture heavy duty soles for work boots, but these are MUCH better than any other brand of sandals I have ever worn. 4. The air cushioning under the heels of the sandals actually works. When the sandals arrived, I thought the air cushioning was a joke, put there by some marketer or sales executive, and almost certainly would be the first thing to fail. However, the clear plastic material that traps and holds air has not dried up, or cracked, or failed in any way. And it really does provide some cushioning for my feet. This was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Con: 1. The “acupressure” points on the insole ARE a joke. Clearly this is a gimmick, a marketer’s dream of creating a “feature” to enhance sales, but that really does not work as described. Initially, I found the bumps and ridges irritating, forcing my attention to my feet for the first 15-minutes or so after putting them on. Over the months that I have worn the sandals, the bumps have flattened down considerably, but they are still an irritation. And according to my friends who practice Chinese medicine (as opposed to allopathic or osteopathic medicine), the body’s pressure points on the foot are very precise in location. However, the very imprecise act of putting a sandal on each foot means the bumps often press in different places each time, completely negating any possible effect. If there was a way to flatten or sand off the bumps, I would have done it a year ago. 2. The Velcro (sorry, I mean “hook and loop”) fasteners have nearly failed on the main binding strap that goes over the top of the foot. The other sites (that never get readjusted) are holding fine, but the primary-use fasteners that do most of the work no longer bind well at all. In fact, on one sandal, the binding now only works on approximately 10% of the surface area. Perhaps this is intentional, some sort of planned obsolescence, forcing me to purchase new sandals every couple of years? I don’t know, but it is the one glaring failure of this otherwise near-perfect brand of sandals. Overall, I strongly recommend this brand, especially at the price point Amazon sells them for.
