A Game-Changer for Gray Hair
I absolutely love Surya Brasil Dark Brown Henna! My hair is 90% gray, and after being gray for over five years, I decided it was time for a change. I discovered this product through Dr. Dray on YouTube, who recommended it as a non-toxic, chemical-free hair dye that leaves your hair softer, shinier, and healthier. That’s exactly why I gave it a try—and now I’m on my third bottle! This henna has exceeded all my expectations. My hair looks amazing, and I often receive compliments on how soft and shiny it is. One thing to note: I do need to leave the product in my hair for at least double the recommended time to fully cover my grays. For root touch-ups, I need to refresh my roots every three weeks or so. When I do this, I simply mix the touch-up amount into my roots and then work it into my hair, like highlights, ensuring it blends seamlessly. What I love most about Surya Brasil is that it has no strong smell, no harsh chemicals, and no irritation. As someone highly sensitive to chemicals, I stopped dyeing my hair years ago, but this product has been a perfect solution. It’s gentle, effective, and leaves my hair looking and feeling healthier every time I use it. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. If you’re looking for a safe, non-toxic way to dye your hair and improve its health and appearance, I highly recommend giving Surya Brasil a try. You won’t regret it!

Fabulous product - creates a new category!
I find it interesting to read the reviews for this product, because some people expect it to be as natural as pure henna powder, and others expect it to be as convenient, lasting or as exactly-colored as chemical hair dye. It does neither perfectly, but comes closer than anything and strikes an excellent balance. This company has in reality created a new category, which is a natural hair dye that contains some real henna extract and way fewer chemicals than the standard stuff, even when called "natural." (naturtint for example contains PPD.) So I've seen negative reviews from people who expect it to be one way or another, but far more positive reviews from people who realize the beauty of the new category. It isn't pretending to be 100% henna and isn't hiding the ingredients. Personally, I love it. I come from the 100% pure category, but now I've switched and Surya dark brown cream is now my new go-to favorite. Warning the next part is long! But fun and informative if you want to read. :) For the last several years (7+) I've been regularly dyeing my 15ish% gray hair (almost all in front!) with henna and buxus, and more recently, henna and indigo. Those who have dark hair and cover gray with henna know what I'm talking about. For those new to henna, I'll explain. First you mix the henna powder a day before you want to use it. Then you prepare your bathroom and get everything out of the way that could be stained, and put the whole goop on your hair. it smells wonderful if you like the smell of henna and awful if you either don't like it or maybe aren't used to it. You leave it in for two hours or overnight. You carefully pick up the pieces of it that fell on the floor and made a huge mess. And wear old clothes or you darkest bathrobe for the application. You can't really clean house or do anything else--if you have light carpets or furniture--because the occasional drop WILL come out and stain something. You pretty much have to lie down and rest. Then you remove it. That takes about an hour, all told. My old process was: wake my husband up at 5am to bring out a huge bucket of warm water to the yard where the henna wouldn't stain anything, rinse, repeat (black swimsuit outside in any weather, yes, 5am because I can no longer remain asleep with the massive, leaking henna turban on my head). Then go in the bathroom and rinse, wash, condition, etc. The next step was buxus, which was wonderful until we had a trade embargo with Yemen and couldn't get it anymore. For those not familiar, I will explain again. I have that odd shade of "midnight brown" hair someone else referred to in a review here, which appears black from a distance, but up close is actually a dark ash brown, even a medium ash brown with a dark cast to it. And I do have natural red & mahogany highlights. Buxus as a second step after henna would produce a muddy reddish brown, dark enough not to look red or brassy and light enough not to look vampy. But alas, buxus fades very quickly. If your natural hair is pure jet black, it's easy for you. You can apply straight henna then straight indigo (which lasts longer than buxus) for about an hour each, and you'll get an all-natural, pure jet black that is pretty much permanent. My South Indian friend tried it and it looked gorgeous on her, but it was too much work so she went back to plain red henna. For me the problem is that if my hair turns black, I just look awful and vampy. When my hair darkens beyond a teeny fraction of a shade, my skin looks grayish and pale (which normally appears light olive and rosy), wrinkles appear that were never there before, my grays turn YELLOW and the rest of my normally ash brown hair is BLACK so I look like a BUMBLEBEE. So for the last year or so since I couldn't get buxus, I used Henna, (the painstaking process described above) and then Henna plus Indigo as a second step. Another painstaking process, believe me. The color comes out okay, but a bit dark for my taste. And I have to be extremely careful with how long I leave it on. If I leave it on 5 minutes too long it'll get that blackish cast again and I'll be vampy all over again. But the fuss was worth it because I wasn't visibly gray and it was truly all natural and even organic. :) So I happily went through that elaborate process for several years! Fast forward to now and I'm running two businesses, not one, and can't do it anymore! Plus the fact that my gray quantity has increased enough that I have to redo it EVERY WEEK. For me that was where the rubber met the road. I searched "natural hair dye" hoping someone might have come up with something easy and relatively natural that worked. I was delighted to find Surya Henna cream! It works great! It's reddish but dark enough with some dark brown that it's not screaming, and not too black. It still has a little bit of that red/black thing going, but the colors are soft enough that I look like neither like Ronald McDonald nor a vampire. And it's SO EASY. It works perfectly when you follow the instructions! ;) Let me tell you my mistakes with use so you don't have to repeat them. :) I first tried the burgundy in this brand (followed by a little black to stop the shouting of red) and got great coverage with oily hair. I used to leave my hair unwashed for several days before applying henna (it's good for it and helps the color stick) so did that in this case, thinking the effect might be similar. The burgundy stuck fine, but the black didn't take at all. So this time I tried the straight dark brown over one week unwashed hair (and extra oil added) and nothing took! Well, it did but there were still some pale roots. So, when all else fails, follow the instructions! I washed again, didn't condition, then re-applied. The color is a teeny bit on the dark side (duh...I applied it twice!) but still great, very soft and shiny, and oh, did I mention how EASY it is? I may go back to Henna and buxus at some point if we can get buxus again, and maybe even henna/ hennaindigo again occasionally just for fun...when I don't have so much to do. But I'm so glad I've found this and that someone cared to experiment with all these lovely herbs and a few not-too-scary chemicals so we can have this wonderful, luscious convenience! I'm a convert!

Best henna color I have ever used
I switch to a henna-based color about nine months ago. I wanted to use something that didn’t have a strong odor, and that hopefully would save my hair. I’m about 40% gray, and I have a huge “skunk stripe” in the front of my hairline. The picture that you can see is the day of coloring. Usually my hairline is very white. Almost all of my gray hair is concentrated at the front as well as my temples. Which is unfortunate for me, But this henna color does a very good job of hiding that. If you have any experience with Hannah color, you know that you can’t use it to make your hair get lighter, but that was never my goal, I just want to have chestnut brown hair like I did when I was younger. I know that and it doesn’t work for everyone, but this one has really worked for me. I mix the Hana in a bowl and use a brush to apply it at the route and at my hairline. I apply it to clean, wet hair. I also use a clarifying shampoo BEFORE applying the color to get all the oils out of my hair first. I don’t think that’s technically “required” but I always have better gray coverage when I do that. Are use a shower cap and also I use a hat to keep my head warm while the color is processing. I’ve learned overtime that my gray hair is extremely stubborn, so I usually leave it on about two hours. It doesn’t irritate my scalp at all, and I have very sensitive skin. The processing time is long, and that is a bit of a pain, but it’s worth it for me. It completely covers my gray, doesn’t irritate my scalp, and doesn’t have a foul odor. I always wash it out with the co-wash shampoo, like Wen. I don’t use regular shampoo as a matter of course, except before I color my hair, and that might be why my color last longer but it seems to last a really long time. I only do all over color about once every two months. That takes an entire container. I do a touch up about every three weeks, I just pour a small amount into a mixing bowl and apply it to the front of my hair as well as my temples and once again use a shower cap and a beanie to keep my head warm and moist while the color is processing. It took a while to get used to this kind of color, as opposed to other box colors, but I like this one so much more. My hair is much healthier now.

It's Better than Nothing. And that was my choice....
So for those who cannot, or not want to, use chemical-based hair color, this is definitely a new type of product. However, compared to the ease of use of chemical-based hair color and the gorgeous results you can get yourself or in a salon, it's still a "last resort". I turned to this product because my hair had been thinning for a while and my scalp getting more and more sensitive. I checked out my hormones (perfect) and had no other conditions that cause hair loss, including thyroid or glandular or female imbalance. No autoimmune conditions linked to hair thinning. The dermatologist said - it's from hair color. So I changed to the "natural' or "low chemical" brands were causing my hair to fall out. The only ones that I could tolerate still had ethanolamine or other derivatives which are now being shown to contribute MORE to hair loss than ammonia. Anyway, it got to the point that my scalp was tender and the dermatologist said - you choose. Either stop coloring your hair or watch it fall out. Period. I am way too young to enjoy being silver and blonde looks terrible on me and I still have a lot of dark spots. it's quite a pickle. So I switched to this. It is MUCH easier to use than powder henna and MUCH less prone to red tones. That said it does not compare to regular hair color. it is runny to apply, stains everything if you are not careful. You MUST wash your hair and get any product or conditioner OUT of it if you want decent grey coverage. I also have to leave it on longer than 30 minutes...So it is kind of an annoying, long process of washing your hair clean of anything, messy application, wait an hour, rinse it out, then condition and style. It's about 2 hours. Also, it helps if you avoid product with silicones that build up because otherwise you will be in an endless cycle of coloring and then washing it out - I use lightweight products and DEFINITELY as sulfate-free shampoo. The less you wash it, and the more gentle your product, the longer it will last. But it definitely fades noticeably for me after 2 weeks. I had highlights which I scrupulously tried to protect but eventually this stuff ran down on to them. It didn't look bad but definitely it is hard to use this product for spot root touchup if you have light highlights and dark smugde roots like I do. I have had to become a lot more flexible about my haircolor, let's put it that way. I am lucky in that I can still go to a salon to get my lengths toned (I found a salon willing to do a toning while trying to avoid my scalp) so now I only use this to try to do root touchups and then one every two or three months I have the salon try to make sense of the color. If I did not have them to help me, I would just have to switch to one color. My hair HAS STOPPED THINNING and HAS STOPPED FALLING OUT - so, for me, it was obviously the hair color that caused my problem. My scalp is healthier and my hair is thicker and healthier. The dermatologist thinks I can try coloring again but at this point I am just sticking with the toning. I don't want to sustain another round of hair loss. If I go totally grey at some point I will reconsider things. Maybe someone will have invented a true holy grail product by then!! So.... it is definitely better than nothing. It's better than being prematurely grey and much better than thinning or . But, it's not a panacea and my hair color looks OK, but not great. Instead of contributing something positive to my appearance, it just "doesn't take away" if that makes sense. More important, even tho it is a somewhat non-descript, ordinary color, I have a full head of healthy hair again and a healthy scalp. Sorry to go on and on but I hope this is helpful to other women in the same boat!

You don’t have to give up product due to this junk.
I’ve used this product for a long time with wonderful results. Can’t use chemical dyes due to allergic reaction. This henna dye has been clumpy and runs down face when applying. It also washes out quickly. I gave up on it after too many applications of bad dye. I figured Surya Brasil was using a cheaper henna to cut costs. I saw in reviews that everyone else was experiencing the same thing. They must be losing money because there product is now trash. I called Surya Brazil’s customer service. They told me that the product has not changed and that the problem is with the third-party sellers. The best thing to do is buy from a store or directly from Syria Brazil. Who knows what the storage situation is for third-party sellers and how it has affected the product. I ordered from Surya Brasil and also bought at my local Whole Foods Market as I needed it before a vacation. Sooooo happy to say the quality was what I expected. Soooo happy I don’t have to mix my own henna and leave on for 4 hours 😃. It is more expensive than Amazon prices but it works. Once again I can use 1 bottle for two different applications. I had been using one whole bottle with Amazon Henna Brasil.

I love this…
The fact that it is pre-mixed and in a bottle is convenient, but I also really like the product itself. I left it on for 3 hours and it gave my hair a perfect, rich, dark brown color. Exactly what I was looking for. The color came out even despite the fact that my hair had different colors underneath. My hair also feels silky, looks shiny and it did add some body which is perfect for my fine hair. Yes, it dyes the scalp, but I think that’s a plus. I might leave it in longer next time.

So much better than powder henna!
I ordered the dark brown henna, as my hair is dark brown with some whites starting to show. Before I was using the powder henna version where I had to mix it myself. THIS is so much better! It’s ready with no hassle, it has ingredients in it that leave my hair shiny, STRONG and soft!!! The powder version I used previously would dry my hair out even with tons of coconut oil. It also doesn’t stink like the powder henna (Thank God!) and it covers my whites perfectly. If you have naturally light hair or dyed hair you should know: Henna is unlikely to ever be the right fit for you. Henna is by design really best for dark hair. All henna has red as its base, so please know you can’t ever achieve cool tones with ANY henna. So when you have lighter chemically dyed hair, red will show easily in an unflattering way. It will easily turn copper or orange. If your hair is naturally light with no prior chemical dye in it, you may be able turn it into a beautiful dark brown, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend the very red shades for you. Any already dark hair will easily look beautiful with henna. I have thick hair and leave it in for about an hour. If you have fine hair, you don’t have to leave it in quite as long. Try maybe 40 minutes? It lasts for maybe 3-4 weeks on my hair. I don’t mind replenishing my hair frequently with it since it feels so much better after! It really strengthens the texture of hair. I will give the burgundy shade a try very soon, looking forward to it!

Great non-allergenic hair color/conditioner!
I bought this henna cream after having two months of out-of-the-blue intense sensitivity to every product I used - whether new, or tried and true. My face just suddenly "rejected" my makeup, face wash, moisturizer, etc. and in the end, I developed eczema for the first time at 58 years old! Through all of this, I decided to seek out beauty products containing less allergens and chemicals, to try to avoid the same type of hyper-reaction, with natural shampoo, soap and the like. Although I hadn't had a reaction to traditional hair dye, I decided to try this to avoid that altogether. Surya henna cream is fantastic! It's as easy to use as regular hair color. The process is the same except for the timing - this stays on for 60 vs. 35 minutes with hair dye. I'm using Dark Brown and the color at first is extremely dark, though not black, but it's fine with me. I wash my hair every day, or 2x if it's a gym day, so it lightens daily. I've been doing it regularly every 2 weeks but could stretch it to 3 if necessary. One of my pet peeves with hair dye is the brassiness that occurs after a few weeks. So far, I haven't seen that with this product! I do get some reddish highlights, and I think my grays might be the red ones, but I never get that horrible orange color as it wears out! I've given up conditioner because the henna makes hair very soft and more conditioning makes it too soft to style. I'm happy with the grey coverage too; I'm also more forgiving if a few greys peek through seeing as how I'm not putting potentially harmful chemicals on my head. All in all, I'm 100% happy with this product! Update after using a few months: I switched from Dark Brown to Chocolate (one shade lighter) because there seemed to be some cumulative increase in the darkness of the brown, where it was more black for the first week, rather than brown. Tried the Chocolate and it did the trick.
