Each step has a rust-inhibitive surface and easily expands and retracts with one hand. Each step comes with grip tape and measures 24 inches with 8 inches between each step. Climbing in wasn't so bad but we were a little nervous that someone might slip coming out, so we looked for a better way. We have a Lippert chassis, so replacing the old one-step version with a Lippert two-step version seemed reasonable. Others have noted that there is a small gap (side to side) that needs to be filled with shims and that turned out to be the case. A few stainless washers used as shims on each side cured that problem. With RVs, I guess there is no One-size-fits-all. If we had mounted the steps as they came, ground clearance would have been a problem and we would have still had about a 9" drop from the RV. The side supports are pretty stout stuff, but I was able to cut out a 3 x 4" notch from each side with a Sawzall with a metal blade. It went really well and the result is a big improvement. Drop is now 7" and the steps are very sturdy. Another improvement is the ease of pulling the steps out. The new steps use a different design. These will fit with some manipulation/drilling the hole so it lines up better. Once you get it to line up they make a big difference compared to the factory installed one step. There is still a decent drop from the camper to the first step but it sets further out so you feel a little more stable. Especially with the lower step to catch your momentum as a medium-tall person.
