Do I need to drain the grains prior to putting in another batch? I've been using it for a couple of days and it looks like they have congealed.

they are suppose to congeal they should look like cottage cheese you keep straining off the spoiled milk and adding fresh milk the culture will continue to grow without adding more kefir. when you use the kefir you use it sparingly and Keep the remaining Kefir to grow in fresh milk.

I've been using this for almost a year but twice lately I've found green mold around the top of the mesh. Any idea what would be causing this?

It is difficult to say what it "green mold" because we don't know for what purposes you use this container. Nobody report this, despite we sold several thousands already. Remove it with soap if it is removable, or boil several minutes. Container resistant to boiling.

Mesh seems melt to the container at some points. Does the mesh lose fit to the container after removal? Is it better to keep it in place?

What are you doing with it? It should not be heated...

This container is manufactured from Polypropylene (food grade, approved by FDA for any food and pharmaceutical needs). Food grade Polypropylene doesn't need addition and doesn't contain Polyethylene terephtalate (PET). It is also free from Bisphenol A (BPA).
