It appears to be opaque, sort of a cloudy 'white'.** A: It is clear. Let me say mine only lasted a few days before it cracked. This would not be good to use if you'd be going in and out if it more than once or twice a year. It was opened an average of 12 times (cookies) and broke in 3 months **Q: Does brown sugar dry out in these containers?** A: I keep my brown sugar in a smaller container. It dries out very slowly but if the container stays pretty full you don't really notice. **Q: dishwasher safe?** A: Never tried it but I would say the bottom part is likely dishwasher safe on the top rack. I would not wash the top in the dishwasher, though, because water will gets trapped in the seal. Even when I wash the top by hand this happens if I'm not careful and its a drag to get the water out. Still I love these things for storing flour, sugar, and other dry goods. **Q: Can I store liquids or semi-liquids (like guacamole) in this for transporting somewhere, or would it leak?** A: I never put liquid in it.
