Big Little Lies: Season 1 (Digital HD + DVD)

Loved It! Engaging. Great cast.

Love David Kelley's work, and this is a classic. I haven't laughed so much in a very long time, and he makes you care about these people in spite of their obvious failings. Both seasons have a great soundtrack, not to be missed.

I rarely review TV shows or movies, as it's such a subjective thing, even if everything about the show is fantastic, if it's not something you're interested in, you won't like it! That said, I'm going to throw in my 2 cents on this show. (My review is just on the show, as seen on HBO, I did just receive this set from Amazon but haven't watched it yet so can't comment on any extras on the blu-rays).I started watching this when it began on HBO, as I enjoy all the actresses and actors involved, plus it just looked really good! I was not disappointed one bit, other than that the show ended, as all good things must. Every episode was perfectly done - the character development, the cinematography, the pacing - even all the children's acting was fantastic. There was so much going on with each character, there was never time to get bored or feel like the show went too fast or too slow or whether it spend too much/little time on any one character's issues. When the final episode started, it was so exciting to finally find out not just who was the bad person (or people - honestly, we didn't know who, if anyone, was totally innocent or guilty) but to see how everyone's character fared in the end. At the same time, as with all shows that suck you in so completely, it's such a melancholy moment when the final credits roll and it's over for good.I did not read the book before (or after) seeing this show. I understand that there were a few changes here and there but nothing drastic. I know there are always those people that get so incredibly bent out of shape when they read the book first and something - ANYTHING - is changed! I've never understood this, as it's just a silly waste of energy on something, in the grand scheme of things, that makes no difference in the Universe. Besides, as a show/movie always says at the beginning, it's "BASED ON" a book/story/play. That's the disclaimer right there that means "this is an interpretation of some of this book/story/play."I also understand that there is a "movement" of people who want a second season of this - and, while I suppose it's possible the author could be persuaded to quickly hammer out more storyline, I just don't feel like it would work in this situation, as part of the magic of this show was the children - and, seeing as these kids were just starting First Grade, by the time something was written, a screenplay hammered out, a shooting schedule made when all cast members are available, and actual shooting started, these kids will have already aged too much - and it certainly wouldn't be the same without the exact same children! I personally just don't see how a second season would be feasible or remotely possible AND be as good as the original 7 episodes that were based on one book...not a series of books, just one. But that's my opinion and, as I stated at the beginning, opinions of TV/movies are too subjective. I'm happy loving/enjoying this original mini-series for what it was!

Fantastic show! I highly recommend!

This TV series has some of the most talented and highly respected actresses of our time, and it seems talent such as this has no gripes about accepting TV roles any longer. This is a new concept we are enjoying and resultantly we have "raised the bar" somewhat and we seem to expect higher levels of talent these days on the "Telly." This series opens with 4 separate families whose parents get caught up in petty gossip and siding off against each other, and suddenly an unexpected murder happens in flash backs. Each family in the series is interesting and has their own list of personal issues we are just beginning to learn. The behavior of the characters is overly exaggerated and sometimes silly, but not so much it will lose me as a fan. I understand the comments, but this show is so well acted the implausible stuff is just part of the drama. I can see parents I've known in the characters here, in a more dramatic way to show interest. Such as the location; The families in the show enjoy an upperclass town with luxurious seaside homes, with backyards of private beaches, instead of fenced in yards, and breathtaking views of ocean waves crashing against large rocks and sand right outside your kitchen door...No I am not dreaming, tee tee,..I do love the scenery, and It is highly unrealistic there is such a town where families live year round in such a beautiful ocean place, or to see public schools where vacation homes and lounge chairs belong. Think of Martha's Vineyard with a school and busses the streets clogged with kids running around. Yes, but I can dream, and I love watching my dreams come true on TV. I noticed low numbers in reviews and not too many fans yet. But my guess is that this will change.

I got this DVD Season AFTER I had finished reading the book of the same name. The actors in this Season were excellent and I was quite pleased that it followed the book for the most part. The book was definitely a different style of writing and I liked it and recommend that you read the book. The interviewing snippets were a big part of the story-line in both the DVD series and the book and helped keep things rolling along... even when you were not quite sure exactly what they were talking about.... but that was a big part of the Interest! The story kept my interest as did all the different people (I did keep a list of who was who and who was married to whom etc). Being an ex-school-teacher (elementary) I enjoyed the story lines involving the kids too. (The kid actors in the DVD series were excellent little actors too!) This was the first book I have read by this author, LM, but now I'm reading "What Alice Forgot" … also enjoyable! I've also read that there might be a follow-on Season Two DVD set coming in 2019 … but this Season covers the entire book (which was a minor concern of mine since I only had two episodes left to binge watch last week … but it all came to completion!

American Beauty lässt grüßen. „Ein perfektes Leben ist eine perfekte Lüge“ – dieser Slogan trifft den Kern dieses HBO-Mehrteilers ganz wunderbar.Jeder Lehrer oder Pädagoge kennt wahrscheinlich eine oder mehrere dieser „Helikopter-Eltern“, die sich wegen jeder Kleinigkeit an die Gurgel gehen, ihre Konflikte und Streitereien über ihre Kinder austragen und sich gegenseitig an Luxus- und Statussymbolen zu übertreffen versuchen. Da wird die junge, engagierte Grundschullehrerin schnell zum Spielball der alteingesessenen Oberschichtsfamilien, da werden Kindergeburtstage boykottiert ohne Rücksicht auf die Gefühle eines völlig unschuldigen kleinen Mädchens. Der – insbesondere zu Anfang absolut unausstehliche – Charakter Renata (Laura Dern) ist die (vielleicht gar nicht mal soo überspitzte) Personifizierung der überfürsorglichen Mutter und Kleinstadtmatriarchin; gerade weil ihre Beweggründe - Angst vor sozialem Abstieg, fehlende Anerkennung der klassischen Vollzeitmütter und natürlich schlicht die Liebe zu ihrer kleinen Tochter – absolut nachvollziehbar sind, macht es einfach Spaß, sie zu hassen. Interessant finde ich, wie schnell man mit Reese Witherspoons Charakter Madeline sympathisiert, obwohl die beiden Figuren im Grunde zwei Seiten derselben Medaille sind – hier halten einem die Macher (Drehbuch: David E. Kelly) raffiniert den Spiegel vor.Der Krimi-Plot, der das Geschehen umrahmt, sorgt dabei von Anfang an für Neugier beim Zuschauer. Jemand wurde umgebracht… wer, von wem und warum wissen wir nicht. Ein klassisches Whodunit also - diese spannende Ausgangssituation hilft, um sich durch die zu Beginn etwas anstrengenden Vorstadtmutti-Zickereien zu kämpfen, gerade weil man neugierig ist, wie diese lächerlich harmlosen Rich-B#tch-Probleme am Ende in handfesten Mord umschlagen konnten. Das Geschehen entrollt sich in Rückblenden, immer unterbrochen bzw. kommentiert von den –sich ständig gegenseitig widersprechenden – Aussagen der von der Ermittlern befragten Freunde / Lehrer/ Eltern, die selbst ein Verhör durch die Polizei zur Klärung eines Mordfalls in erster Linie als willkommene Gelegenheit sehen, um in aller behördlicher Diskretion übereinander lästern zu können. Hat man sich an die Art und Weise der Erzählung erst einmal gewöhnt, macht das Ganze richtig Spaß. Desperate Housewives trifft Die üblichen Verdächtigen.Dazu kommt, dass jede/r der Schauspieler absolut überzeugen kann. Am meisten beeindruckt hat mich Shailene Woodley, die ich vor der Erstsichtung von Big Little Lies noch nie bewusst wahrgenommen hatte – wie sie den beiden weitaus prominenteren und erfahrenen Hauptdarstellerinnen Witherspoon und Kidman (beide ebenfalls großartig), die auch als Mitproduzenten der Serie fungieren, die Stirn bietet, verdient schon Beachtung. Ihre Rolle als alleinerziehende junge Mutter von Young Sheldon hat daran gewissen auch einen großen Anteil, bietet der Charakter Jane aufgrund ihres Underdog- und Außenseiterstatus doch am ehesten Potential, die Sympathien der Zuschauer schnell auf ihre Seite zu ziehen.Die Szenen, die die gewaltsamen Übergriffe innerhalb einer Ehe (man erfährt bereits in den ersten zwei Folgen davon, wäre also eigentlich kein Spoiler, dennoch lasse ich das Nennen von Namen mal bleiben) aufzeigten, waren – und das meine ich positiv im Sinne der filmischen Qualität – teilweise unerträglich mit anzusehen. Häusliche Gewalt ist nun mal ein großes Gesellschaftsthema (und wird es wohl auch immer bleiben), vor allem aufgrund der hohen Dunkelziffer, denn – und dabei dreht sich die Serie ja nun mal im Wesentlichen – hinter der strahlenden Fassade eines schönen Hauses und einer glücklichen Familie können nun einmal solch finstere Abdrücke lauern, oftmals ohne, dass Freunde / Familie / Nachbarn Wind davon bekommen. Das Verhalten des Ehemannes, die Entschuldigungen und das furchtbar schlechte Gewissen, das ständige Versprechen von Besserung nach einem unbeherrschtem Gewaltausbruch und die damit verbundene emotionale „Zwangs“-Anbindung der Frau an ihn... aber auch der Kontrollzwang, die manipulativen Mitschuldzuweisungen – das erschien mir absolut greifbar und glaubwürdig und genau deswegen so unheimlich und schockierend.AB HIER SPOILER!Ein kleines Problem hab ich allerdings mit der Auflösung des Ganzen. Ich ziehe dafür keinen Stern ab, weil es wirklich extrem spannend inszeniert ist – während der letzte Folge hab ich teilweise buchstäblich den Atem angehalten. Doch wenn sich am Ende herausstellt, wie alles zusammenpasst – bezüglich Jane’s traumatischer Vergangenheit und auch die Aufdeckung, wer aus welchem Grund den Gewaltausbruch an Renata’s Tochter verübt hat – so scheint mir das Ganze doch irgendwie zu gut zusammenzupassen. Anstatt thematisch herauszuarbeiten, wie HÄUFIG häusliche Gewalt auftritt und die Handlungsstränge gewissermaßen nur metaphorisch zu verbinden und eine Aussage daraus zu formen (wie etwa in Stieg Larssons Verblendung) werden sie hier TATSÄCHLICH miteinander verknüpft… und anstatt eines allgegenwärtigen Gesellschaftsproblems konzentriert sich das Übel hier plötzlich auf nur noch einen, ebenso tyrannischen wie psychisch kranken Täter. Damit wird das übergeordnete, in der Serie angeprangerte Tabu-Thema irgendwie klein gehalten zugunsten eines leicht konstruierten Plot-Twists… Und im Falle von Renata’s Tochter hatte ich ab einem gewissen Zeitpunkt ja ihren auffällig teilnahmslosen und im Hintergrund der Handlung bleibenden Vater in Verdacht; da war die tatsächliche Erklärung in der Serie dann doch um einiges harmloser.SPOILER-ENDEGroßartige Mini-Serie, an deren Stil und fast durch und durch weibliche Erzählperspektive ich mich als männlicher Zuschauer erst gewöhnen musste. Dann aber war ich wie gefangen in der Handlung, dieser trügerischen Bilderbuch-Idylle der Hafenstadt Monterey und ihren spannenden Charakteren. Vor allem männliche Zuschauer sollten sich also nicht von der sich klar an Frauen richtenden Vermarktung abschrecken lassen – ich hab auch erst mit mir gerungen und den Kauf keinesfalls bereut! 9 von 10

Glad I watched this. To begin with, I thought the director did a remarkable job. I also felt the female leads' acting was exquisitely spot-on and transparent while the main male protagonist's unsavory role was very well played. The bluish colors distracted me to some extent but on the whole, this was a most satisfactory viewing experience. Kudos to all involved. Highly recommended.
