You can record a short phrase as well.

Can you adjust the volume?

No unfortunately. And my dog did not respond to training with it. Bells on the door was easier and worked

How loud is it if you record your own voice?

It was loud enough for dog to hear and anyone within 10 feet. It is not obnoxiously loud

How do I get the battery compartment open?

There is a small screw that holds the lid to the battery compartment use a Philips head screwdriver and unscrew it and then you can open the lid. You'll want to make sure you put the screw back or the lid will not stay on.
