Umbra Starfish Drain Cover/Hair Catcher, White

So, I am not a particularly anxious person, but I just HATE to stick my hand down the gaping hole to retrieve things that fall into the disposal. I have this lurking suspicion that just as I get it inside, the disposal will come alive and grind me up. One of my few irrational fears in life. Did I mention I also hate to clean the slimy crud out of the regular type sink stopper that comes with the sink? Gross. No matter how often you clean it. I think those begin producing slime every time I leave the kitchen. So, I have used a drain screen, similar to this one, but made of metal, for years. A simple disc that sits there covering the hole, but is easily cleaned. The problem is that this metal one is painted and in rather short order, it begins to chip. Then it rusts. Then it has to be replaced. I've gone through a half dozen of these so far. I was looking for a better solution and found this. I love it! Exactly the right size, cleans up easily. It works perfectly for catching anything that should not go down the drain, and has the added benefit of providing a little cushion on the sink bottom; no more scratching the sink or the pans as I scrub them. One aside, it does seem to pick up a little staining from foods that stain. Rinsing it, rather than letting food sit, seems to mitigate that. I have the white one and I think I would replace it (when needed) with black, for this reason. I know my silicone spatulas don't stain, so I think this could be an improvement I would suggest to make it more kitchen compatible. But then, they don't market it for kitchen use, so I can hardly complain. I can't imagine a design that would work better for this purpose, and I will be getting additional ones for other drains in the house as well. Nice job on this design!

This has worked great to stop someone’s long hair from clogging up the plumbing! It’s durable, well designed, effective and the plastic is thick enough that it feels like a quality product for the price. I’ve tried the mushroom one and a mesh one that sits in the drain. Both did not work well, got pretty gross pretty quick and ended up in the trash. This one makes it easy to see and retrieve the hair because it’s all in plain sight, it’s not catching soap and getting all gross and it’s easy to get everything out without removing anything or untangling stuff. It’s also something that kids and teens can maintain for themselves without much complaint since the gross factor is eliminated. There is also no issue with whose hair it is because it’s evident immediately and not hiding under anything. I’d recommend this for anyone that wants to keep their plumbing clean with a quality product without much hassle.

It’s great at catching hair and you don’t even need to take the drain cover off to take the hair out. The product was easy to install and the suction seemed to stay in place until I took it off for the first time. Before purchasing I read other reviews that said to take it out every so often because they had problems with mold growth. Just to be cautious, I took it off after about a month to see if there was mold. Luckily there was no mold, but just a bit of grime from shampoo and the permanent drain cover. But after I removed the drain cover for this first time, the suction wasn’t as great when it put it back into place. I think that’s a common problem with such products, so it’s not a big deal to me.

I had the occasional cockroach I'd find in the backroom. Figured out it was coming for the drain. Haven't seen on since I started using this. The suction cups are handy to prevent them from pushing it up. If you have a flat surface shower this will work great, if you have small tiles, it won't stick to grout so you need to make sure at least 2 opposite ends are suctioned on the tile. This also works well for hair if you shave in the shower.

Catches hair but it has to be re-secured several times per shower or bath. I would actually save time overall if I just cleaned the inside of my drain monthly. Other than that it’s cute and my grandson thinks it’s a starfish.

Very disappointed. The suction cups don't work at all! I even wet it down to see if it would stay out and nothing. The suction cups are almost flat so there's nothing to grip the shower floor with. DO NOT PURCHASE!

I have lived my adult life trying to catch my long, curly hair before it gets to the drain. I normally stick it on the shower wall until the end of the shower at which time I gather it together and throw it away. I thought I was doing a great job at getting it all, but I still have to snake the drain at least once a year…. Anyhow, I staying at a friend’s house recently and she had one of these. I still did my normal routine at her house and was surprised to see how much I had missed. As soon as I got home, I ordered one immediately. I still collect my hair during the shower, but this great little item catches about half again as much by the end of each shower. I love the fact that my drain snake won’t be used as much in the future. As others have said, the suction cups don’t work on all surfaces (such as MY shower pan, but it still works amazingly well - I just have to be careful not to dislodge it while showering. Will definitely buy again when (if?) this one wears out!

Love it. This one really sticks to tub. And is fun to look at, too❣️

Na de zoveelste verstopping deze in onze douche gelegd en het is verbazingwekkend hoeveel haren tegengehouden worden die anders in de afvoer zouden verdwijnen. De zeester blijft goed op z’n plek zitten door de zuignappen. Eenvoudig schoon te maken met stukje papier, neem hierbij ook de onderkant regelmatig mee.

Funciono Perfecto. Mi tina no tiene una coladera, solo una moneda que gira para que se vaya el agua por lo que no podía instalarle o colocar nada para que no se fuera el cabello. Esta Estrella fue la solución, las ventosas se sujetan con fuerza y se quedan todos los cabellos en ella. Es fácil de limpiar y sirve de adorno.

Lo compré para tapar el desagüe de la bañera que estaba un poco feo, efectivamente tapa el desagüe y queda muy curioso, pero encima recoge hasta los pelos más finos y pequeños, así que estoy muy contenta con la compra y lo recomiendo 100 %.

The Starfish Drain Cover from Umbra was delivered very fast and was incredibly easy to fit. The cover has small suckers underneath each of the star 'corners' and these attach the drain cover to the bath. I have a pop up waste cover in the bath tub which I removed to apply this star drain cover. The bath is mainly used for showers so this solution works for me.The star cover is slightly domed shaped which means the support for the pop up waste is well accommodated without getting in the way. To use the bath tub for a bath rather than a a shower, I simply replace the pop up waste by removing the start cover and screwing back the metal fitting. The star cover is made of soft silicone like material. I opted for the white version and it looks good with the white bath tub. It fully covers the drain waste whilst allowing water to drain nicely and it is very good at catching most of the long hair which would otherwise risk getting stuck in the drain pipe. I simply remove the collected hair after each use and dispose of it in the bin. I purchased this item because the water from the bath was draining very slowly after five years from having anew bath tub fitted. My plumber cleaned the pipes and the offending item was a large ball of hair which accumulated over the years. He recommended I get this sort of drain cover to prevent future problems and I ma very pleased with this solution. Avery simple and incredibly effective idea which works extremely well.
