Product Description All Around The World is a collection of hits from one of the steadiest selling artists in the world! Newly remastered by band mastermind Jeff Lynne and including liner notes written by Lynne. 20 total tracks including 'Evil Woman', 'Turn To Stone', 'Hold On Tight', 'Showdown', 'Rockaria', 'Alright', 'Rock N' Roll Is King' and many more hits! Sony. 2005. desertcart.com The Electric Light Orchestra were one of the biggest and most successful bands of the late 1970s, producing a massive string of hit singles and albums that almost any other band would envy. Their works have been cited as influences by such hip acts as Grandaddy and Super Furry Animals. Their frontman and leader Jeff Lynne has been the producer of choice for people like Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and George Harrison. From "Evil Woman", "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Mr Blue Sky" to "Livin' Thing" and "Hold On Tight", there are few duds amongst these 20 remastered tracks. ELO produced some of the biggest and best singles in rock & roll's history, and All Over The World: The Very Best Of ELO is an excellent reintroduction to this great band. Hopefully, this also signals the beginning of a long-overdue revival and re-evaluation. --Robert Burrow Review: It's Jeff Lynne what else needs to be said! - Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. I've always considered E.L.O. as the potential band the Beatles may have become if they had somehow survived into the 1970s. Like the Beatles, E.L.O. (In essence, Jeff Lynne), produced music that was rooted in a strong rock 'n' roll sensibility yet also drew on classical music influence. And. like the Beatles, E.L.O approached the recording studio as a creative laboratory, using a combination of top-of-the-line songwriting craft and engineering wizardry to produce music that always stood out when it appeared on the radio. When the surviving Beatles briefly "reunited" in the mid-90s for the Anthology project, it was no surprise that Lynne was brought in to put the finishing touches on several unfinished tracks, an acknowledgement from the Beatles that Lynne, in many respects, was their artistic descendent. All Over the World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED ] is not a complete collection of all of E.L.O.'s hits and famous songs, but it does its job of conveying the width and breadth of the group's output. "Mr. Blue Sky," which may now be known largely from its use in movie soundtracks and commercials, gets the CD off to a strong start, if ever there was a song to put a smile on your face and beat the "mean reds" "Mr. Blue Sky" is it. Other tracks, such as "Evil Woman," "Don't Bring Me Down," and "Turn to Stone," are state-of-the-art mid-70s rock-'n'-roll songs. "Sweet Talking Woman" is a brilliant example of Lynne's songwriting skills and engineering craft, with indelible melodic hooks. The iconic "Telephone Line" will immediately sweep anyone who was there back to 1977, a time when "Star Wars" was playing at the local mall and Jimmy Carter was still considered an effective president. E.L.O. is in many ways embletic of 70s pop culture, with its kitschy flying saucers motifs and Steinway/Wurlitzer mash-up sound. My favorite E.L.O. song, "Living Thing," is included, with its opening chords that hook you in and won't let you go (although I've always found the lyrics more obscure than usual for Lynne). "All Over the World" to its credit includes several songs I was unaware of, of these the best one, for me, was "Rockaria!" perhaps the most rocking song ever written with an operatic theme. The CD also includes "The Diary of Horace Wimp" a Beatleseque story -song with an upbeat message about how a little courage can go a long way in life, and "Hold on Tight," about the power of perseverance. These are two of the best lessons you'll ever hear in pop music. The CD does not include detailed recording information about each track. There is a booklet that mainly consists of an essay by Lynne, looking back on the time the music was recorded that is more impressionistic and general in tone than specific on the backstory behind the creation and recording of each song. There are several E.L.O. compilations floating around out there, like flying saucers orbiting over earth. None, really, has every song you would want on a greatest hits package. But thankfully, the days when you would have had to buy every album in order to get every song are gone, never to be seen again. Enjoy what is offered on "All Over the World" and fill out your ELO library with the other songs you want from an MP3 store. Recommended for: E.L.O. fans who want one album for their collection, people interested in hearing more E.L.O. music after being exposed to it in commercials or movie soundtracks, fans of the later-stage Beatles and 60s/70 pop music that isn't of the singer/songwriter genre, disco, punk, or "soft rock."
