I told her and then thought that kids often find caterpillars crawling around, they are funny looking or colorful, and it might be a good idea for me to get her a book on caterpillars. It is easy to find pictures of the butterflies, not so easy for their larva. This was a good general introduction of caterpillars she might find. I told her how to rear one in a potted plant. Later she called and told me the book was right because the butterfly was what the book said the caterpillar was.
