Good buy with realsitic expectations
Have had the guitar for almost a month now. For the money you pay, workmanship is very good (as usual for Yamaha), no additional set-up was required with the action quite comfortable for me. Initially it had difficulty staying in tune and the sound was less than impressive, but this was due to the stock strings. No, I have not replaced them yet as after 3-4 days of tuning before playing, they stretched quite nicely and the guitar has been in tune for more than a week now (and played almost daily - several songs). Sound markedly improved as well - it was very tin-like out of the box, it has deepened some. It will probably further improve once I get to replacing the strings. Talking of sound - do not expect to get what you are getting out of your full-size instrument. Obviously the smaller body will produce a different result, but for the money and the flexibility to easily fit in your trunk, overhead compartment on the plane or anywhere else where space is limited (or just grab by the neck and bring it along when going for a picnic), it is great value. I am tall (188cm) and it is more difficult to move along the neck (the distance between both hends is much smaller than with full-size) when you need Eb on 6th fret for example, but it is not impossible. Still very playable once you get used to it. I cannot compare to other 3/4 sizes as I have never owned or played one. If you are looking for a guitar to take on stage - you will likely not be happy with the sound performance, but if you only need it for the occasional travel with friends or would like to strum several chords before going to bed - it is perfect. Oh yeah - gig bag is also pretty good for the price you pay. :) Price paid - GBP104 inclusive of shipping.

five stars JR-1/ FG Junior.
Arrived two or the three days of ordering, very well packed in two cardboard boxes, very well-made set up with a low action made from good materials, good machine heads like Fender vintage but smaller. no fret buzz on any frets but a little bit rough when bending but are starting to smooth out after a little use, very easy to play nice sized three-quarter scale very Ed Sheeran, great sound for finger style, includes a soft case gig bag great value for money for the pro to the beginner, Yamaha have done it again, five stars JR-1/ FG Junior.

Great guitar, that really reliable Yamaha sound
Great guitar, that really reliable Yamaha sound. Set up good, no awkwardness it getting use to the feel of the fretboard.....if you've played yamahas before you'll know what I mean. Not a big body so a tiny bit tinny, but you'd expect that....spruce top will get warmer the more it's played. For the money excellent value....much better value than the Martin or Taylor versions (sorry guys the name doesn't carry those for me !) one bit of feedback you need a shoulder strap on the gig bag......4 stars in view of the gig bag strap thing; but that's a personal preference.

Yamaha JR1
I'm a beginner so I'm no expert but I think this is a great little guitar. It's easy to transport, it stays in tune pretty well, Good sound, the actions ok for me. It's a good compact guitar ideal for a beginner

A real breakthrough
This is a great guitar, particularly for me. I am an older small person who has always struggled to learn to play a full-sized guitar because of the size of my hands and fingers. The tone of the guitar is good and I have made more progress than I ever have on other guitars.

Very nice compact guitar.
Bought for my 8 year old daughter who is very happy with it. I did my homework before buying this guitar: I gave up learning as a child as I had a huge box of a guitar with painful-to-hold-down-strings. Put me right off: didn't want this for my little'un. As other reviewers have stated, it's pretty small for a 3/4: it's more like a 1/2 size guitar, but I think this is a better size. Not too much of a stretch for little arms & fingers. It stays in tune remarkably well. All in all would defo recommend.

High action
If you are buying for a child learning and moving over from nylon string my daughter found the high action hard and lots of buzz and twang. Not the guitars fault, I took a punt without her trying it. Guitar is fine, small for a 3/4 though.

Bad quality tuning, this products has bad quality I purchased this for a gift but later I figured it out my niece didn’t use it because of bad quality sounds even though properly tuned.

I am basically an advanced beginner, having started out about a year and a half ago on the Yamaha 3/4 Size Classcal Guitar (with nylon strings.) Also taking lessons. I recently purchased this Yamaha FG 3/4 Size Accoustic Guitar. In my opinion, it has good intonation, has a more than decent rich sound to it. It is definitely not a "toy" guitar. After about five tunings at the beginning, it has held its tune well--only very few tweaks. The action is low without buzzing, which is good for tender finger tips, and just plain, overall fretting. I have to agree with some of the reviewers who believe this to be smaller than a 3/4 size guitar. This one is pretty small. I don't think it's 3/4 size--more of a half-size. I am only 5 feet tall, female, with small frame and fingers, and I find the distance between the strings to be a bit of a tight squeeze. Distance in frets is okay for my stature. I was worried that going to a steel string accoustic guitar would be painful on the tips of my fretting fingers since I have nerve damage in my fingers--one of the reasons I started off on the Yamaha 3/4 size classical with nylon strings (which is a great nylon string guitar for beginners), but I don't realize any difficulty or pain with this steel string guitar. I have calluses by now, but even so, for one just starting out on a steel string, I don't think it's any more painful than starting out on nylon strings. A setup by a luthier, I don't think it is at all necessary unless you are at least an intermediate, at which point you probably own a $500+ guitar that has a louder sound (I think this one has more than average projection, and aginn, intonation). Besides a bit of a problem with the string-to-string closeness, the only other thing I can think of is the fretboard, compared to the overall size of the guitar, and the body, is more than average heavy--not a real biggie, but I thought I'd mention it. Because of its small size, if you are taller than five feet, or have average or large hands, I can't give it five stars. If you know enough about guitars and think you can handle a guitar this size, I would give it five stars, especially for a small child. All in all, if you are looking for a beginner steel string accoustic guitar, especially for a child just starting out, I don't think you could go wrong with this guitar. You get a real guitar at a very good price, that's pretty vibrant, while keeping in mind that it is on a small scale. Here, I would give it five stars. If I had a child who wanted to start playing a steel string accoustic guitar, I would not hesitate to purchase this guitar. If you are taller than five feet, or have large fingers, I do feel this good guitar would be a bit of a tight squeeze, and also possibly not as comfortable to hold. If, on the other hand, you want to purchase a very nice quality guitar without shelling out big bucks, especially for a beginner, I would highly recommend this guitar.
