Zinsser's Cover Stain & reg; is an interior / exterior primer, sealer, stain sealer and bond coat that dries for recoat in only two hours. On interior surfaces, Cover Stain & reg; dries quickly and has great hiding power, providing outstanding stain killing and enamel undercoating performance. Stains of all kinds are permanently sealed so topcoats are blemish free. Cover Stain & reg; is especially effective on nicotine and water stains. New wood trim can be primed, sanded and top coated the same day, saving time and money. On exterior surfaces, Cover Stain & reg; has a unique formulation that delivers full penetration and flexibility on all surfaces, especially dimensionally unstable wood panelling and trim, where few oil-based primers can succeed. Review: Really does seal and cover water stains - Two weeks ago failed grouting in shower caused water staining in room below. I left it for a week to dry, including one day with dehumidifier running. This paint is very thick. I used a synthetic brush and it really dragged. I don't think it would be easy to apply with a roller. Having said that, using a 3" brush, (size of tin restricted use of larger brush) putting smallish amounts on it often, it did cover well without much spraying off the brush. Area was ceiling and top of wall, mostly light staining, about 3 square metres in all. I applied two generous coats and the manufacturer's info of coverage (9.8m per litre) is about right. Overpainted with Leyland Trade Super Leytex Matt emulsion, two coats, and that gave a perfect finish apart from one very small area where the staining was very dark. I gave that one extra coat each of the Zinseer and the emulsion and the result is perfect. Heads up. This is solvent based and the fumes are VERY strong. I had to open the doors to ventilate the room. Also, equipment must be cleaned with white spirit. It was recoatable after two hours, although I left the second coat overnight before applying emulsion. The 1 litre tin doesn't have a handle, so I stood it in a paint kettle to make it easier to handle. The Zinsser is expensive, but over decades I've had to deal with similar problems and this was the easiest and most effective method I've come across, so the trade off with price was worth it.

**Q: Would this work well on old floorboards, as other paints aren’t hard wearing enough**
A: This works as the perfect primer.  I have used this on old floorboards, followed by Little Greene Floor oil based undercoat and finished off with Little Greene Floorpaint.  This was done three and a half years ago and it still looks brand new.

**Q: Is this the shelac 4 base version**
A: Not sure. It doesn't have a shiny finish, it's a Matt finish. Maybe you could describe it as very slightly 'egg shell'. It's a very good product and covered sky blue plaster board in one coat with ease. It's also much thinner than normal paint (surprisingly) so, if you buy it and intend to apply it with a roller brush, be prepared for some spatter.

**Q: Is this good for sealing nictotine smells?**
A: I have a rented property which had a very stained ceiling in the lounge. I sugar soap washed and then painted, it is very thick so you use more than you think. After 6 months there is no sign of the stain or smell. Very happy with the product

**Q: Can zinnser cover stain be painted over linseed oil putty window caulk? can cover stain then be painted over with water-based paint?**

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Use a lot of Zinsser products.

I’ve tried lots of different stain blocking products but this one is, by far, the best I’ve found. Their paint products in general are great and the white ones stay white for a long time. Does this particular paint smell ? Oh yeah, for sure, but not for so long that it’s a problem, does it cover stains ? Definitely and normally in one coat which can be a blessing when time is short. Can’t complain about any of the Zinsser products, but expensive but quality products carry a higher price I suppose.
