I wouldn't recommend doing that just because some chemicals may turn toxic using purigen and later released into the water. I would personally use the bleach recommended. It's cheap as well with cheap bleach costing like 30p.

How do I regenerate my bag, I know it's got to be soaked in bleach, but how long for and what is best to remove the bleach from the bag?

Bleach to water ratio 1:1 then rinse after 24hours, soak for another 24 hours using a dechlorinator and r/o water! It should then be rinsed thoroughly it may smell fishy but that’s normal! Seachem dechlorinator is dear I use one off eBay!

No, there isn't space inside that filter for it. Ideally you need an external canister filter for this item.
