It keeps track of its origin point once set. Whenever turned on, the large LCD displays the actual slider position ready to start measurement. It's the only dial caliper that I'm aware of that does fractions like most local woodworkers use. I use it 1,000 x daily. I find it so much easier to see relative measurements with a dial, than with numbers. **Q: This is the second one I have purchased. Please try using something dull and skinny such as a paperclip to try pushing the origin button. The origin button is very hard to press because it is not meant to be pressed on a regular basis. Our authorized Mitutoyo repair technicians use a dull rounded tip pick to press origin buttons. Also, the origin button sometimes needs to be pressed for up to 5 seconds. I reccomend that you try holding it for at least 10 seconds just to ensure you've held it long enough. All in all an exceptional tool that should last many years. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Buy cheap, buy three times *by A***R on 24 October 2024* These are my third set of digital calibers, the first 2 sets being cheap ones. For sure the cheap ones work and are fairly accurate but after a couple of years they die. The Mitutoyos are expensive but they ooze quality. Ground steel rather than plastic. Close the calipers, hold them up against a backlight and you can't see any gap between the blades due to misalignment (unlike the cheap ones). The action is incredibly smooth and slick, way better than cheap calibers which makes taking measurements so much easier. Incremental mode is fantastic, no more having to mentally take the difference between two measurements and the absolute encoding means no need to constantly rezero. We use an older set of 300mm Mitutoyos at work, no problems whatsoever over the 7 or so years we've had them. As with all calipers, check Youtube to see how to use them in all modes: outer diameter/length, inner/bore diameter/length, depth, step height.
