From the Publisher Review: The Black Island - The Black Island Tintin story exists in 3 forms. The original 1937 black and white newspaper serial , this 1943 colour album version, and the 1966 redraw that was produced at the insistence of the publishers of the English editions, as they felt the portrayal of Britain was inaccurate and out of date. The 1966 version is the one that will be familiar to most Tintin fans. This 1943 version of the story works much better. It is very much of it's era, borrowing from Hitchcock's version of the 39 steps and contemporary newspaper stories of forgers. It has more slapstick in it and less sophistication than the later stories. The 1966 version is a bit clumsy by comparison, marrying a 30's Ripping Yarn with the sophisticated artwork that Studios Herge were producing in the 60s. It is a real treat to finally be able to look at both editions side by side, page by page. The excellent book " Tintin-The Complete Companion by Michael Farr" covers all this in great detail as well as info on all the other books and is a must have for anyone who loves these books as much as I do. Review: The quality of the physical book - Loved all the Tintin books as a child. We used to borrow them from the public library. Now in my 60s I'm collecting them all in hardback. Bought 12 so far and they are all great quality and just how I remember from my childhood.

Great comic book to read leaving you in awe and laughter at the same time.
Being a fan of Tintin and Herge, I got this comic book having seen the cartoon version of the 'Black Island' on TV ages ago. There are some differences between the TV version and the comic that I got from Amazon. Personally I prefer the comic version reading the incredible adventure and mysteries that Tintin, the main character in the comic goes through, followed by his faithful dog Snowy. There are a few funny bits in this one that always make me laugh, which made me a fan of these comics. The best one for me had to be the clumsy antics of the 2 english detectives, Thomson and Thomson, which is featured in this particular book. I enjoy reading this comic book when I am out and about and relaxing at home. If you like Tintin or like stories of detectives and bumbling characters, then this is certainly a comic book that is worth buying.

As a child, I remember going to the library ...
As a child, I remember going to the library and checking out the Tintin books and being drawn into the adventure, wishing I could be Tintin. Now in my late 20's, I have decided to purchase all the Tintin books so that when my 2 year old is a bit older, I can share the world of Tintin with him :-D

I prefer books like this that are not full of blood, guts, tortured darkness, sex, etc. I mean I look forward to handing down my comics/sharing my comics with my son. I don't buy books that lean on those cheap tricks to tell their story. A good writer can build suspense and action and adventure without devoting 10 panels straight of fighting. I was desensitized to that stuff I saw so much of it in movies and books for awhile, and I am happier having trimmed it out of my life to a great extent. Now I seek items like this book that can tell a great story without grossing me out. Having said that this book is good clean adventure. It goes to a great locale in Scotalnd, and the artist does a fine job of giving you some flavor of the region. He does great with the accents too. Now Tintin gets shot, but it is a minor scene without blood, like the old west shows. This is a most enjoyable adventure. Now at times the dialog goes from full and interesting to too simple (jarringly so) as if the writer had worked on it on different timeperiods, and sometimes does not seem fluid. But that makes me wonder how much is just lost in the translation from the original French language. TinTin races or maybe rushes from one mini-adventure into the next at a breathtaking pace that does not always allow for the characters motivations to be explained and so some stereotyping does occur. The thought ballons of the dog are not neccesary and cheapen the story, to my view. Even with these minor complaints this is a fun book. Reading it maeks you feel as if you have stumbled onto secret treasure since these books are notnpart of the American mainstream. The art is great, and the locales, even the costumes are obviously researched with a very period sense. The castle is very well drawn and the draftsmanship of buildings, vehicles, and landscapes are superb. This softcover edition has great paper, strong cover material, good binding, and very nice color job in inking. While I think that the story development/plotlines and dialog work of comic book artist/writer Carl Barks is superior, I really enjoyed this book. I understand that of the 20 plus Tintin books, there are some real jewels. This book was enough to hook my interest.I look forward to reading the rest.

Love these books, big and beautiful. I bought it for my 8 year old son. He loves the cartoons and movie. It is at the top end of his reading ability, but worth the effort to read. He loves these books. Came super fast through amazon.mx, arrived in less than a week.
