## Description

From the manufacturer Winsor & Newton Series 7 - The World's Finest Water Colour Brush More than any other tool, the brush is a direct and fluid extension of the artist’s hand, eye and expressive vision. It is with that principle in mind that Winsor & Newton has crafted fine artists’ brushes for over 150 years, earning a reputation for making the world’s finest from the very best raw materials. The standards of quality for this brush were set in 1866, when her majesty Queen Victoria gave orders that Winsor & Newton, holders of the Royal Warrant, be commanded to produce the very finest water colour brushes in her favourite size the No. 7. The resulting brush known as the Series 7 and the standards of quality set in 1866 are the same. There are three essential qualities that define the finest water colour brush: Point, Snap and Spring and Flow Control. Since 1866, the handmade Series 7 has proven itself to be the standard –bearer in all those qualities, offering a rapier-like point, perfectly balanced spring with extraordinary capacity and flow control. For artists who appreciate exquisite quality and longevity, there is no other brush than the Winsor & Newton Series 7. Manufacturing Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes are prepared entirely by hand in our brush factory in England, in the same facility since 1946. Experience is the key which will turn an average brush maker into an expert Series 7 brush makers. In fact in the last 60 years the three people in charge of Series 7 have a combined 134 years’ experience! Technical Anatomy of a Series 7 Brush Three essential qualities that define the finest watercolour brush Point Every Series 7 brush should come to a crisp point and maintain that point during use. Pointing without colour – swirl the brush in water, give the brush head a hard flick of the wrist. Point when painting – drain excess colour into palette and then twist brush head gently to get the perfect point. Snap and Spring The brush snaps back crisply into shape with the right degree of spring to allow the artist superior control with a degree of give and take between the brush and painting surface. Flow Control – Speed and control of painting The larger belly of the Series 7 brush hold more colour than other sable brushes and this makes applying washes so much easier. Along with the colour carry capacity the Series 7 comes with such a fine point too. The same fine line can be achieved with a size 10 as it would be with a size 0 as the reason for the larger size brush is when you want a reservoir of colour. The Series 7 range The unique features of a Series 7 brush are its wider belly coupled with a long tapered point.

Review: The best brushes I have found so far - These are fairly expensive, but they are easily my preferred brushes for miniature painting (e.g. Warhammer). I have tried other Kolinsky Sable brushes, and also dabbled with synthetic brushes, but for me these just work out best. I only use acrylic paints (GW, Vallejo, etc) and don't use metallics. These have a good point, hold enough paint (but not too much) and they last a long time. They are also easy to clean and if looked after will retain their shape. I mostly use a No.1 as it is large enough but has a great point (most of the time). Smaller sizes seem to have no improvement in the tip, but have quite dramatic difference in the body and so don't offer me any advantage. I do however feel that these are quite expensive, and this means I do continue to try to find an alternative, but since they really are, for me, the best brushes, I fully expect I'll be back for more. These won't improve your painting without practice and patience, but they are far far better than cheap synthetic brushes. Try one, and look after it.
Review: The king of miniature painting. - These are the absolute kings of brushes. They are pointed enough to paint eyes, but have a large enough body to collect large amounts of paint and work on larger surfaces. These do come with a premium price tag but they're the kings and that unfortunately demands a high cost.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will alcohol based ink be harmful for these brushes?**
A: I have used WN series 7 brushes for decades- both in water based and oil paints. Keeping the bristles soft and straight requires that they be well cleaned, conditioned, and repointed after each use. if there is any residue left in the hair or in the ferrel the brush will deteriorate and split. I clean them in WN brush cleaner and wash them out with water - I soap them with Masters cleaner and preserver and point them. They are the best...use them accordingly.

**Q: Are these only for watercolor? Do they have acrylic?**
A: Because the hairs are soft, very soft (after all, they are sable), I think the brush could only be used with liquid media. I use mine for India ink drawings. If you're using acrylic as you would oil, then maybe the brush could be used as a blender (although it may be too soft for that). If you're using acrylic as watercolor, then the brush should work. Winsor & Newton has a website you can check. It shows this brush only for watercolor. They do have a collection of acrylic brushes.

**Q: Which W & N series brush is the best for oil/laquer/acrylic**
A: The series 7 is the best for acrylic and ink. I don't know about oils and lacquer, I have never used those mediums.

**Q: There are a lot of reviews mentioning inconsistent quality and possible knockoffs. Which sellers should I stay away from & is amazons stock authentic?**
A: National Art Supply inventory is 100% authentic. We have submitted invoices to amazon to prove authenticity.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The king of miniature painting.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lives up to it's reputation
*by H***3 on 20 October 2023*

The Winsor & Newton Series 7 gets recommended so much in the miniature painting community it is almost a cliché. I've been painting for years, but only recently finally gave into the peer pressure and bought one. I have to say this brush absolutely deserves it's reputation as the being the best brush for minis money can buy. It is an absolute pleasure to use. I have had it for about five months now, and use it almost every day, and it still has a point that looks sharp enough to hurt someone with. All I've done to maintain it is run it under a cold tap for 20 seconds after every painting session and has the same shape as the day I bought it. Not a single hair has gone rogue. It's crazy. Fantastic value for money.
