Every child between 4-6 deserves this book!
Bridges the gap between toddler books and longer, more detailed stories. Nell the dog is a listening dog, one day a week she goes to school and the children read to her. (This actually happens in some schools, the kids love it.) But Nell is even more useful. When all the school’s books disappear Nell is on the case. The illustrations are detailed enough for lots of, “Can you see.... “ activities, the story is brilliantly just right to keep 4-6 year olds engaged, amused and informed. The rhyming text makes it a joy to read aloud. Readers just getting started will soon recognise some of the oft-repeated words and be encouraged to try the harder ones. Just love it, as does our granddaughter, just getting ready to start school in September. I do hope she finds school as wonderful for her as it is portrayed in the book!

I love this book as much as my children
So we have a LOT of Julia Donaldson books in our house, and they are consistently the most requested books by our children. And while some of them (I'm looking at you, Stick Man) irritate the hell out of me, I generally can tolerate them, and find the words quite catchy. Now I don't mind Axyl Shaeffer's illustrations, but the illustrations in this book I LOVE. They are a little bit retro and reminiscent of the Tiger who came to Tea, but also totally contemporary. They just cheer me up. And the story is nice - especially as it is all about how wonderful books are! My 4 year old son loves parts that he can remember and say out loud along with me, and there's a lovely page where they go past a farm and a zoo, and my nearly 2 year old daughter can join in with trying to name the animals. Highly recommended.

I have bought many Julia Donaldson books for my children and they have all been fantastic. This book is no exception, it's one of my favourites from her collection. Such a great story, lovely rhyming words which are easy to read and great illustrations. It is a decent sized book too, so I would recommend for toddlers aged 3+ who can stay focused for a bit longer. Lovely book!

Le dénouement de ce livre est vraiment excellent. C'est un livre simple, moins "profond" que la plupart des livres de Julia Donaldson, mais il demeure très agréable à lire et plein de péripéties. Mon fils de 4 ans l'adore.

In this heartwarming tale, we meet Detective Dog Nell, a clever canine with a knack for solving mysteries and a love for books. Together with her trusty sidekick Peter, they embark on a series of adventures around town, sniffing out clues and unraveling mysteries like missing books/stolen stories. What I love most about this book is how Julia Donaldson weaves together a captivating story with enchanting rhymes and rhythmic prose. It's just so much fun to read aloud, and the colorful illustrations by Sara Ogilvie truly bring the characters and their adventures to life. But beyond the mystery-solving fun, the book also has a heartwarming message about the joy of reading and the magic of libraries. It's a wonderful reminder of the treasures waiting to be discovered within the pages of a book and the special role that libraries play in our communities. 📚🐶🔍
