GEARWRENCH 42 Pc. SAE Ratcheting Tap and Die Set - 3885, Silver

As a retired homeowner I don’t use this as much as a lot of other mechanics might. But sure is handy to have when you have nuts and bolts that need to be straightened out. Seems to be a good quality product. I have two now, one in standard and one in metric.

Very high quality for the price. Works great so far and I liked it so much I purchased both the SAE and Metric versions.

Absolutely thrilled with my purchase of the GEARWRENCH 42pc Tap and Die set! It's truly a game-changer. I recently rethreaded my Blackstone model #1868 4 air fryers original 3in casters, stem thread pitch from 1/2-14x1 to the new casters 4in, stem thread pitch 1/2-13x1, and let me tell you, this set made the job a breeze. The tap and die numbers and sizes are super easy to read, which made the whole process smoother and more efficient. Plus, the build quality is top-notch. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this set—it's definitely a must-have for any toolkit!

This set is very high quality however it is a bit too expensive for what you get. Other brands will include more pieces but I value reliability this brand offers over the other lesser known brands. The case has high quality hinges and the tap holders pivot out for easy selection. As a bonus the 2 tap holders also can be removed from the lid for transport to where the work is being done! Nice. One small issue I have is that the die holder tool does not fit correctly in the molded cutout provided without first removing the die and then screwing the set screw inward. I like to leave the last die used in it for the next use. A bigger issue is that the die is held so tight that it cannot be removed from the tool without screwing a bolt in and then hammering it out. While the precision fit is a good thing it is not convenient. I tried lubricating the die which did not help and finally I removed the thin sheet metal spacer that seats into the tool. This allowed easy die insertion and removal however the die was no longer 100 percent centered in the tool. Finally, I realized without using the spacer it would be a trade off of rapid tool use versus accuracy of thread cutting. Without the spacer this over priced set is no more accurate than many cheaper tools. My fear is that the spacer will be lost if not kept in the tool and used on a daily basis. I cannot understand why the manufacturer decided to use a spacer instead of machining the tool to fit the dies. Overall this set is very accurate but inconvenient to use.

I had need for a die and die handle to chase the threads of a caster on one of my wife’s sewing room chairs. Went to two local big box stores and one hardware store to shop. I would have spent about $30 for what I needed just for that one thread size. I decided instead to order this tap and die set, and I am glad that I did. The ratcheting feature of the die handle is quite cool! Build quality is awesome!
