The padding in the palm means that they are useful for the use of power tools and any other sort of impact tools if you're using that sort of tool all day. The material is tough all over and the back is fabric so it's somewhat breathable, which has been a godsend in the recent hot weather. It's not a mesh though, so your hands can get hot, but they work well in cooler, more usual weather in the UK because of this, so they're a good compromise. The black material seems to be very hard-wearing and has protected my fingers from nick and cuts very effectively.
