A deadly battle of wits ensues between the navies of the United States and the U.S.S.R when the Soviet Union's most advanced nuclear submarine makes an unauthorized approach to America's eastern seaboard. Based on the novel by Tom Clancy. Review: Probably Sean Connery's best roll - the best submarine based film I have seen with great scenes and lots of twists and plots. Review: Great dvd, wonderful film - Excellent film, dvd worked well, film is definitely worth watching.

A Cold War classic.
I bought this film for the THIRD time...yes, you did read that! I had previously bought the same film on the 'Special Collector's Edition' DVD format and BOTH of them have been faulty (note - not from Amazon), I assume there must be a common fault as both of them had the same volume problems and sticking points in the same scenes, so be weary if you're buying that version. So, I ended up buying this on Bluray. I don't really buy Blurays' as I see it as over-rated and just another way of squeezing extra pennies from the consumer, but I have to say, it works for this film! The picture is much clearer than its DVD counterpart, the menu screen is great too. However, I am a bit dissappointed with the lack of extras, but what can you do? Alec Baldwin really nails the Jack Ryan role and makes it his own, and to me still hasn't been bettered (definitely not by Ben Affleck anyway...). Good ol' Shean Connery is as reliably shmooth as ever while Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, and James Earl Jones provide a superb supporting cast. Feminists will no doubt be furious with the total lack of a female cast, but make no mistake, this is a proper man flick, but way above the mindless violence of films such as 'Rambo,' this is intelligent viewing and a real espionage thriller, and it appears that Cold War in the 80's was definitely a man's world! Superb performances, a great, gripping script and storyline and brilliantly filmed. Great sound quality too.

SEAN CONNERY AT HIS BEST
GREAT MOVIE

The Hunt for Red October. A great and innovative story.
A good story, Red October is an innovative submarine built by the Soviet Union. The entire story is good and holds one's attention. We had seen this when it was first broadcast on T.V. But have not seen it broadcast since, hence this purchse. The propulsion system interested me, as many years previously I had designed a sea water aquarium pump, based on what was probably a similar principle. It did work, but...

Languages & Verdict
Blu Ray all zone (not confirmed) Ratio of the feature film: 2.35:1 Languages of the feature film: - Dolby True HD 5.1: English - Dolby 5.1: French, Italian, German, Castilian Spanish - Dolby 2.0 Surround: Commentary by the director John McTiernan Subtitles for the feature film and the making of: - French, German, Italian, Castilian Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish and English for the hard of hearings. Verdict: This film on Blu Ray is really amazing, a good picture with an outstanding soundtrack. The soundtrack is perfect with a fantastic music. The picture has a natural noise quite visible during the dark shots but not too annoying. Even if the pictures is not 100% perfect, it gives us much more details about the models submarine for instance the missiles hatches visible on the hull of the Typhoon, the grid pattern on the outer bow doors of the caterpillar. We can also count the missiles silos when Ryan is about to go after the cook and show us how long the submarine really is, it makes the scene looking truly impressive! High Definition picture means details we are not supposed to see !! - We can clearly see the whole deck and the conn tower of the Red October is a giant model (where Sean Connery and Sam Neill stand at the beginning of the film) as we can see the edges of the model barely submerged. - Technical mistake about this model, there is no wake as there are no propellers either which in fact are visible on a real typhoon-class submarine (when afloat). - The wires holding the 3 models submarines are visible on nearly every "underwater" shot. For instance, when the first torpedo is shot at the Red October, we can clearly see several wires holding the Red October when she is evading the attack. - The CGI effects are quite obtrusive but it is 1989 CGI, in fact we can say they are good considering what we were capable of doing in the 80s. Overall, it is a true pleasure to see this film on Blu Ray with its beautiful picture. Although we see the wires holding the sub, the underwater sequences still look superb thanks to the flawless motion and lighting of the 3 submarines. Bonuses: - Making of "Beneath the surface" -> Dolby 2.0, 29 min, SD, subtitled. - Theatrical Trailer -> Dolby 5.1, 1.5 min, HD, no subtitle.

Super dooper film
I think that Alec Baldwin was the best Jack Ryan, but then I am totally biased, sorry. (Shame he only did the one film). I think HF did a fine job but he will always be Indie to me and BA was okay but didn't rock my world. Anyway, this is a fine film and I have watched it several times. Fine cast, good story, and it still grips me (which is strange because I know what's going to happen!) Recommend one evening with a few beers (or maybe some vodka to get into the spirit ha ha). I really must love this film because I have bought it on VHS, DVD and now Blu-ray. I only bought the Blu-ray because (a)it's cheap (b) love the film (c) wanted as high a definition on my screen for as little as possible outlay. Definitely worth it.

It was a very enthralling movie. I read the book first and found the movie to be a very good account of the novel.

The Hunt for Red October is an Amazing thriller Submarine Movie! I thought that nothing can Beat the Tension like it was in the movie Crimson Drive but this Movie is actually good and sometimes even better than Crimson drive but both are Great submarine movies with regards to nuclear Submarine. In Hunt for Red october.Captain Marko Ramius is captain of soviet submarine Nuclear class submarine with technology undetectable to sonar.Sean connery Plays a Dam good role of a Submarine commander Ramius. He kills one of his superiors and give counterfeit orders to his crew with excuse of exercising the nuclear weapons on American soil. However is he really there to Start a war or does he have other Intention??? Alec Baldwin plays a CIA Investigator but who is more of a Naval expert and Who met Marko Ramius in his life and knows the man well. The CIA think Ramius is going to Fire NUKEs at USA while Alec Baldwins Character thinks otherwise he is going to defect. The Russian government on the other hands Supports the CIAs suspicion causing more Fear and terror. This movie has Really a Good pacing and editing with some good Visuals and music. The language in the Sovient sub is russian first but later the russian crew speaks english. This movie was Released in 1990 and is Really a Thinking Mans Action thriller movie with Charisma Rather than "BOOM BANG BOOM". Sean Connery plays well for a Sovient sub Commander along with other great Cast.Glen scott plays Well too for an USA Submarine commander who is Tracking Ramius submarine vessel with his Intelligent SONAR Team. This movie might not have the CGI of todays but the submarine shots are still convincing and very creative work of Interiors.with hard work from the art department. I just like the Tension in the movie plus the Suspense the movie actually makes you think and wonder whats gonna happen next. The Dialogue is articulate and very sincere. This movie does a great job to show how Beneath our Uniforms we are all the same But politicians and some people try to Ignite Hatred and War!.. The Hunt for Red october is an amazing written Tom clancy Novel! and I wish Tom clancy RIP but the movies are better than the books. The Redoctober Submarine Incident is Said to be a True event but both countries deny it ever Happening. or are suppressing the matter because of captain ramius wanting asylum in USA and protection from CIA. Alec Baldwin and Sean connery were Phenomenal in this movie! I Belive everyone should see this movie on BLURAY. I am glad I got a very very good! Discount in Amazon India had it been otherwise I would have not tried this movie... HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER IS A MUST FOR ACTION THRILLER FANS and ALL YOU GUYS IN THE NAVY! Cinematography-8/10 Story/plot-10/10 Casting/Actors-10/10 Music-10/10 Submarines-10/10 Bluray quality-10/10
