Why do the very end of my tips not get hot enough to melt the soulder? Just a centimeter or two down the tip is plenty hot enough.

It sounds to me you are not using the right tip or solder wires. Fine tip for SMD and big tip for THT. The needle tip is only for tiny pads and should be used with thin solder wires like .5mm and .3mm.

Does this come with the metal tip cleaner pictured? Its not listed on the whats in the box section but its pictured
