Q: what are the dimensions of the large square (1 of 2). I am wondering if I could fit a small sandwich.

It's probably about 3 1/4" x 3". You could definitely cut a sandwich to make it fit!

It will spill into the other compartments. In my opinion the small 4 compartments is a better size for a 4 year old, my daughter love her 4 compartments container. But it is just for solids.

Q: What is the difference between the silicon lid and the steel lid?

The plastic Dots cover snaps onto the stainless steel lid. All containers come with a stainless steel lid and the colorful cover is an optional add-on. It’s just for decoration and container differentiation.
