Will this fit on the Verizon XP8 ?

Yes. My husband have the verizon XP8 and I ordered this for him. Fits perfectly.

Will this work with the screen facing out?

Yes you slip it out of the cover

How does one disengage the phone from the shell? I've tried everything and it's a quandary...

The phone in shell slides up out of the belt clip for use. The back shell is popped off from the phone for servicing the battery and cleaning.
