As described, up and running without bother.
Thanks to all previous buyers who kindly answered my question about the power source for this external hard drive. As the last time I bought a terrabyte hard drive was in 2009 I was pleasantly surprised how compact this WD is. It arrived well packed, a day earlier than anticipated and is now functioning as expected, as my iMac Time Machine backup, replacement. Plug it in --- off it went. First download about four hours, but after this it will be just topping up. Simplicity itself. And quiet. Looks like a very satisfactory piece of kit, but as with all these things, time will tell.

Works Right Out Of The Box.
Hooked this up to an IMac via a USB 2 port (even though the USB port on the drive is USB 3, it is backward compatible with USB 2) and it worked perfectly right out of the box. There's a single LED showing drive activity which is located at the back of the drive where you cannot see it. Hmm! Somebody didn't think that through did they. I cannot comment of the speed of the drive when it is connected to a USB 3 port on a Mac since I have it connected to a USB 2 port. What I can say is that copying about 1.8TB of files onto it took about 20 hours. As a backup drive it's superb and it is also pretty quiet. Thoroughly recommended.

Backing up and Achieving
I like using these external drives as a backup and archive for my Mac and PC. It is best though, to keep a dedicated WD passport to be used with Time Machine. Also Time Machine does try to back up to one of my other drives, you just need to say no to it, but you do need to re-select Passport again afterwards re-intiate automatic backups. Backup is easy, you just plug the Passport into the Mac and wait. What could be simpler. But always allow backup to complete before doing anything else. The Passports works well with my PC laptop too, when I render films to them. I do keep my Mac and PC drives separate though. I use USB memory sticks to pass files between my PC and Mac. I do stress, I buy the right format Passport drive for my Mac or PC. One most important golden rule; always eject the drive with the computers software before disconnecting. If the drive won't eject, turning off the computer has always worked for me. Over all I well satisfied with the WD Passport drives, and so far have five of them for different purposes and will buy more of them in the future.

Warehouse Special cheap for 4TB. Needed reformatting.
Cheap for 4TB at £70 price I paid. Needed reformatting upon arrival but a relatively trivial matter using disc utilities on Mac. If I was completely computer naive I would have been disappointed that it was not 100% plug and play but with warehouse specials I make allowances that it is not going to be completely as a new item might be. To be honest it makes no difference whether external drives are "windows" or "Mac" as once you've got them you just format them for whatever operating system you are using. I have not reinstalled all WD software as Mac Time Machine will take care of back ups if needed. I never rely on one HD back up so I always buy two HD's and just copy everything from one to another weekly. Currently using WD, Seagate and Toshiba! I just can't stand the thought of losing everything so trying to cover all bases! Primary HD failure message in the past has maximised my paranoia..... BTW the case on the current WD Passport HD's are not as rigid as previous models and creak slightly when squeezed... So don't squeeze them.... And don't throw them either.... They're a bit of a fingerprint magnet too but if you store them in a Next sunglasses bag or similar the marks just disappear.... The final endorsement for Western digital is that I have two Compaq Windows machines still running 40 GB system drives that are over 10 years old still operating and an old WD 120 gb passport external drive that's still in service so they've been good for me.

WD 1TB PORTABLE HD TOP PRODUCT
This WD 1TB portable hard drive is fantastic and easy to use as mentioned in the product bescription. Just plug it in and backup is automatic. I’ve backed up my entire MacBook Pro approximately 625GB in roughly1min. It backed up so quickly that I didn’t get to time it properly but I know it couldn’t be over 1mn. The price is fantastic too compared to others of the same capacity. WD is a top brand product so you’re purchasing top quality. I do hope that my review will help others to purchase this product with confidence.

Really good hard drive had good performance write speeds
Really good hard drive had good performance write speeds. It's a lot smaller than expected, which is actually a good thing. It makes it very portable and it's also very stylish. Perfect to carry round and made out of solid high quality components.

Good paper weight!
After initially being recognised by the MacBook Pro laptop and having installed drivers the hard drive worked well and transferred media across quickly and played content as expected. However within 24 hours, having changed no settings nor turned off either device the hard drive could no longer be seen by the laptop and despite routing to the same folder and drive structures remains inoperable. Colleagues have similar problems with this specific model of WD hard drive and the device fails to load currently on other Macs. The device continues to draw power, but is currently only useful as a rather expensive paper weight.

An okay hard drive if you must go with WD
WD used to be in my view the leaders in storage solutions. They produced fantastic looking external hard drive enclosures and each year i would get a new one in their range. This latest hard drive - well, its not very aesthetically pleasing. The prior generation Mac WD HDD was much nicer in a silver-ish sleek enclosure. IN terms of speed, i can't fault it as how much faster do you really expect your HDD to run in terms of read write speed. The device gets hot with frequent and large file transfer use and isn't the quietest device i own. Since the inception of the Sandisk Extreme SSD and the Samsung T5, I have switched all my external storage devices to SSD. This HDD from WD, is no longer a match in any way to these devices.
