F off robbers go next door!!!!
This lock looks and feels solid and is well known by locksmiths as a good lock that you can depend on to work well, with a London bar on the lock body and one on the keep to prevent punch out it has added power? The London bars are coach bolted through the door to be seen from the outside, as it is worth letting the bad guy know before he starts to work on your door! With the U channel and rail to stop jam spreading, this really tells the bad guys to walk on past! the 5 lever mortice and the 3 star Yale euro it means the robbers have to have many skills to get in! The added long throw lock and another euro deadbolt on the top rail I feel safe to leave my house for long periods, Having some homemade exterior warding made from steel hanging around the lock on the top rail makes it harder to use a tension wrench, this makes it harder to pick the lock! Bolting the jam to the frame with 3 inch bolts helps prevent kick in attacks as do hinge bolts, keep everything tight with insulation to reduce any movements in the door too! Outside lights are a good way to put off robbers, stickers on the glass panels can help laminate the glass making it harder to break! The stickers like mine can be of a barking dog, Karate and telling of security marked property to put them off entering in the first place? My dog had a big water bowl beside my front door, often with a big well chewed bone! Image is everything when defending your home, buy some neighbourhood watch sticker even if there is no scheme in place as a robber may not know that? Think about what you do and don't be the one house with less security than the rest, that's the one they're searching for after all? Don't feel scared but don't be afraid to look like you are, have as I do an alarm but have dummy alarm boxes to all sides of the house. A silent alarm sticker costs very little but sews the seeds of doubt that might with other things cause them to walk away from your house before they do damage to it, Imagine you were thinking about robbing your house what would put you off it most and why, most robbers are poorly skilled but some are good so by really testing the good ones you have eliminated the badly skilled ones! Your house is worth it, you may have seen the devastated look on the face of one who has been robbed so don't let your self be one of them?

For a company known for it's high quality products - this excellent sturdy lock is badly let down by an inaccurate template. I had seen other reviews mention this, but chose to put my faith in Yale expecting they had corrected the problem. NOT SO - using the template, very accurately the holes were drilled. BUT I was shocked to find they did not line up ! I was forced to fill two of the holes with dowels, make my own template, drill new holes and successfully install the lock. WHY YALE does not seem to be aware of this important problem which only damages their reputation and annoys customers is a mystery. DO they ever check the instructions and those vitally important installation drawings? --------- IF you do manage to get this product installed without damaging your door - I do recommend the lock itself. -- But why only 2 keys with such an expensive lock? - not expensive to get a third cut but very inconvenient.

Graphite
This is an excellent lock and is especially good for doors with glass panels as you can lock the handle when home. Some tips If you have to pull hard or slam the door to close it then rub a pencil (graphite) on the back of the latch, as shown in the photo (or get a lube, not WD40) this can happen if door expands, dirt is in lock or slight misalignment. The instructions ask for a 13mm hole. A 12mm drill bit was sufficient. Don’t make the gap between door and strike plate too big. If you do the auto deadlock won’t work.

Avoid - Cost cuts have made this lock uncomfortable to use
This was my third BS1 Nightlatch, after installing one in my previous house, then another at my current place - I used to love these! I wanted to change the barrels because the key stuck occasionally in the outside lock. I phoned Yale for advice and was told that any Rim lock barrel would fit as a replacement for external entry, but I would need to use the old key to deadlock the door from the inside, therefore requiring 2 keys for the one lock! They told me my best bet was to buy another complete BS1 lock - which is what I did. Fitting to swap the existing lock was easy, but when I went to test the door, I realised that Yale had changed the product quality. The handle on the new lock was thinner and rather than having a rounded back it had thin hard ridges and a wide groove on it's rear - I guess to save on metal in manufacturing (see photos). This made the the door handle feel cheap and uncomfortable in use every time I opened the front door. My wife also noticed instantly and was most critical of this penny-pinching tactic in the new nightlatch. In opening the door, my fingers pull against these hard edges. What were they thinking - saving a few pence by making the one place people interact with their product feel uncomfortable, as if something is missing from it? For me, this is the most egregious and willful abandonment of ergonomics in the pursuit of savings on what was formerly a "prestige" product. Well done Yale... I called Yale again to make sure this product was genuine after seeing the new "economy" handle and they assured me that it was. They also told me that Amazon would refund me, even though I had cut the connecting bar to fit the lock before noticing the cheapening of the lock furniture! Talk about buck-passing, Yale... The photos I took after disassembling my old Yale (attached to this review) show how the internal key barrel is punched into the handle and can not be easily replaced. So I can not swap handles as I planned to without attempting to drill out the old lock. Yale (don't but) should provide a kit to people wishing to change both barrels to fit the same key - ideally with a properly made handle! I bought these locks because they felt solid and pleasing to operate. I appreciated the extra quality I got for paying slightly more for my lock, Sadly this is not true any more and Yale have gone down massively in my opinion for making a lock that seems painful to use!

Good quality lock
Excellent value for money. Easy to fit, did go slightly out when working to the template - but that was my fault for not reading the instructions first. A bit of unprofessional drilling got me back on track and no harm done. The lock has a solid feel to it - far better than the smaller one i had fitted before. I like the extra security feature of being able to lock the lever mechanism from the inside - won't be able to use that old broom handle through the letter box to open the lock any more if I go out without my keys.

Uncomfortable on your hand to use.
We owned the previous version of this night lock and really liked it. It was comfortable on your hand and worked very well. We ordered another for another door but this model is slightly different and the actual turning handle is cast differently and it’s very uncomfortable and sharp on your hand. It still fit and works but it just feels cheaper than the previous one. Honestly after having it for about a week, I wish I should have gone with a different option because every time I use it to open my door it’s painful.

Quality has deteriorated!
Bought to directly replace the same lock, but 20 years old. Real downgrade in quality since then. Doesn't fit as well as the 20yo version as internal dimensions are slightly different. This was despite fettling of the existing lock holes and repeated fits - which added considerable time to what should have been a very simple replacement. Ok fit in the end, but left with a MUCH cheaper quality internal handle, that irritates every time it is used. First review ever left here!
