Victorian Fashions: A Complete Lady's Wardrobe (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

Bought for son doing Fashion Design degree. He loves it as it will help him think about making pattern for his final collection.

This book is brilliant for a victoriana enthusiast like myself, I have no complaints about the range of designs it provides. My only issue is that it is basically just a book of patterns with an introduction, it has minimal instructions on the actual sewing - so its going to take a fair amount of guess-work and trial and error as far as construction of the more complex dresses is concern! That said its fine for my purposes as I won't be attempting to make full dresses straight from the books but will be using the patterns to put together my own designs.

Very useful book and very informative although It did not quite cover what I wanted, I think I can adapt the patterns. Very fast, efficient service especially in view of the weather conditions abd pre-Christmas. Thank you.

The book has numerous sewing patterns which those who are familiar with Frances Grimble's books will have no trouble comprehending. I have made up a couple of the patterns and they went together very well and with no trouble. Recommended for anyone who has Grimble's books and is after more.

Great read, but pictures hard to read detail.

This book is limited in that it gives drawings of American fashions mainly for the latter part of the Victorian era and has limited pattern illustrations. For those who have experience of costume design and construction and are good sewers.

Sencillamente genial, referencias de como desarrollar las prendaa y cada parte. Efectivamente se necesitan conocimientos de patronaje pero tambien sirve como herramienta sobre el tipo de vestuario y las partes de que se componen. Recomendado.

I love this book. My only disappointment is that it does not come with the proportionate rulers needed to scale the drawings. The introduction makes no reference to the rulers, nor does it say where to get them or explains what they are/look like. It assumes you already know or have them. I learned what they were from searching the internet trying to figure how to use the patterns. Once I found out what I needed I purchased The Edwardian Modiste, which included the rulers and was good to go. The patterns are awesome and fairly easy to read, takes some getting used to since they aren't like commercial patterns we use today.

I used this only as a guideline to make doll clothes as I can pattern draft I just needed a bit of historical guidance.
