Not without a little bit of creativity on the part of the person wearing the hat. =) In other words, it does not have an automated system/speaker that randomly places you in a house - it's just a very well made replica of the sorting hat you see in the Harry Potter movie. Our son loved it, so I hope this helped answer your question.

Barley. You have to really get your fingers in the pockets on the inside that make the mouth move and they are pretty small.
