Avatar: The Last Airbender--Azula in the Spirit Temple

I was over the Moon when I got it and I’m glad to say it didn’t let me down. The great plot, a fan-favourite character and the fabulous visuals make it truely great! If only it was longer!

The story itself is good the book did come a 2 messed up corners though. Other than tagt the purchase was great! The book does read fast, but I love the start to azulas redemption journey.

This was a very interesting story showing what appens to azula after she attempts to form a new team to try and dethrone fire lord zuko, but oddly she’s not trying to kill him just cut off food supplies and such. I don’t wish to explain more as there would be risk of spoiling it, but I can say this, I have a feeling we’ll get another story about azula in the future.

Spoilery review ahead: I was really looking forward to this, since Azula is my favorite character and I've been wanting an update to her story. I was disappointed, since I was hoping her character would develop meaningfully, which they keep promising us will happen. Nope! After having a deeply disturbing experience designed to shake her up, she proceeds forward with the same goals, convinced she's right and she's got no issues to work on. As always, everything is everybody else's fault, and nothing of value was gained. We've seen this before. The art is just so-so. The action sequences are especially underwhelming, which is a pretty big deficit for a franchise that's known for lots of fight scenes. There are a couple of striking panels (usually larger with a dramatic set-up), but overall it's pretty dull. On the pro side, there are genuinely creepy elements and some real suspense. I shivered at one character in particular. The pacing was good and the story itself kept my interest, even if the characterization was underwhelming. 2.5 stars.

Pre-ordered this because the A:TLA comics have been pretty great and was excited to get a stand-alone story for Azula. I was expecting to get into some things, but this one really surprised me. Avoiding spoilers, this is such a haunting and dark take on a character whose understanding of reality definitely takes some liberties. The unnamed monk is a super interesting character and the temple itself is a cool concept. There’s such a depth and emotional understanding of Azula that this writer just “got”. Would’ve personally liked to see this story drawn out a little longer, maybe another 10-20 pages to really go the full horror route but that’s just splitting hairs. (And something I’m not sure Nickelodeon would approve) This is a must-have for Avatar fans and it’s pretty cheap, so please get it!

I heard a couple mixed reviews about this comic and decided to check it out for myself. It's honestly really good in my opinion, the art is great. As for the story it feels like it's building up to an obviously larger plot. It's well paced and interesting. If you enjoyed Azula's character in the show you would probably really like this. Can't say much else without spoiling anything. Happy reading.

Spoilers warning!! I'm actually glad that this is just maybe a tiny step to her redemption and not redeeming her in one comic. Redeeming for someone realisticly takes a lot of time and making mistakes on the way. The art and writing was amazingly done!:) I think it was an interesting approach for her to face to face others while almost everything not being real.

As an Avatar fan. These graphic novels have kept the magic alive. Not a huge fan of Korra. It's so good, reading them with my kids have been amazing! As stories unfold, I can hear the characters voices in my head. Thanks guys!!

First of all - I'm not a fan of this creation-team. The art style often is not appealing to me, and the writing by Faith Erin Hicks has the tendency to become really stilted and un-natural: flat new side-characters overshadow the main stars, canon characters don't act like they used to, and at points, the dialogue sounds more like an essay tract, where the author unsubtly reveals their own thoughts about the narrative. And it's not like these flaws don't show up here, but they are used to an advantage. The atmopshere is a lot stronger and closer to the show, and there's some believable insight into Azula's hidden feelings. It's still not the end of her story, but contrary to the other entries in Hicks' comic-run, I'm willing to let this one slide.
