Deep Purple's Period 1968 - 1974 & 1984
This Rhino/Warner Brothers Records compilation was released in 2000 to showcase Deep Purple's main classic period of the band all on one CD between 1968 - 1974 and one song from the reformation of the Mark Two line up in 1984. The first two songs are culled from their debut album Shades Of Deep Purple and their second album The Book Of Taliesyn also both released in 1968 but nothing from the 1969 album Deep Purple, these first three albums featured original vocalist Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper, Rod Evans then relocated to America and formed Captain Beyond and Nick Simper with Warhorse. Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) were taken from Episode Six and replaced Evans and Simper, they made their debut on the live 1969 album Concerto For Group And Orchestra, no tracks were culled from this, this now known Mark Two line up starts of from track 3 with the 1970 song "Black Knight" and ends with track 12, 1973's "Woman From Tokyo". In 1973 Gillan/Glover depart the band and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore replaces them with vocalist David Coverdale and Trapeze bassist Glenn Hughes, this now known Mark Three line up made their debut on the 1974 album Burn and in the same year with their second album Stormbringer, the songs "Burn" and "Stormbringer" were the only tracks taken from these albums. After the Stormbringer album founder member guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left the band and formed Rainbow, he got replaced by guitarist Tommy Bolin, the now known Mark Four line up release the 1975 album Come Taste The Band which was to be the last album for Deep Purple in the 1970's, no tracks from this album feature on this compilation. In 1984 Deep Purple (Mark Two line up) reform with a comeback track "Knocking At Your Back Door" from the Perfect Strangers album, the song is at odds with the early songs due to the fact it sounded like typical 1980's Stadium Rock, also my other gripe is, this compilation weighs to much on the Mark Two line up, eleven tracks in total from five albums which makes it uneven hence my four stars, due to the fact it's a bit more of an improvement from the old 1980 compilation Deepest Purple The Very Best of Deep Purple is my reason why I recommend this or otherwise you can go for Singles A's and B's.

Deep Purple were outstanding. Their albums are all worth having. This collection, however, is excellent as a "summary" of their work. Highly recommended.
