Ignore 1 star reviews lovely box set.

Ignore the German edition reviews.4 films on 4 bluray disks in 3 cases with a booklet to a company each of the main 3 films.Comes in a thick hard card box containing 3 blu ray cases. Part 1 and 2 holds representive films and 3 also has in america as well. The booklets are the usual eureka thin but full of pictures and information. The artwork is nice as seen in picture.Happy with the box set but arrow have spoilt me with the battles with out honour box set and there stunning hard cover book. Which I would have loved here.Films not watched yet but seen one and loved it years ago.

This is why I don't sell my books on Amazon any more.

Two of the greatest films in HK cinema (part III is still very good but not in the same league as the first two) about to get a 4k master, Blu-Ray release and Amazon transport reviews from the mistakenly sold German set over. And so, before a box set has been sold by Eureka and despite the sterling work they've done with 'Drunken Master', 'Iron Monkey' and 'Police Story', they erroneously start off with one star. There is no way of separating the editions or understanding that the other reviews were talking about the mis-sold release rather than the film itself. Welcome to the Amazon hegemony which can effectively influence the casual browser before the product has a chance. Buy this box-set - I will - and see two splendid films, one very good, one that we'll pretend didn't happen (OUTATIC&A). You might then understand why some of us who have been disheartened when trying to sell our own work have given up trying to fight the vagaries of Amazon's sense of what constitutes 'truth'.

A terrific release of a wonderful series marred by bad subtitles.

I doubt any of us who grew up watching HK films on VHS ever thought they could look this good. HK films have been notoriously poor on home video. Even if the film was uncut, in its original language and aspect ratio, the master used was usually of a poor quality, several levels below what we would expect from Hollywood movies. Even in this era of Blu-ray we have had to suffer upscales for our favourite martial arts films. The picture quality in this Blu-ray set blows away every previous version. Tsui Hark's vision and Arthur Wong's gorgeous cinematography are finally allowed to shine on home video. The only way this could look better is if it got a 4K Blu-ray release, but I doubt that is going to happen in this country for at least another five years.Less wonderful are the subtitles which add unnecessary vulgarity to these period films. It sounds like a foul-mouth 21st century Brit has inserted themselves into 19th century China. I have owned three previous copies of the first movie and it never had thes words in it. It reminded me of the awful American subtitles for COME DRINK WITH ME which added an out of place phrase about maternal fornication. I have heard that Eureka have rights for more martial arts classics and I hope they don't mar their upcoming releases by continuing this.Another disappointment, though far less of a detriment to viewing is the lack of the Bey Logan commentaries from the HKL DVD releases. Looks like I'm going to have to keep that set for those. It would have been nice not to have two boxsets of the same films on the shelf just to have the complete extras. You have to wonder if the people making these decisions think about the collector.
