Based on Lucy M Boston s best selling novel The Chimneys of Green Knowe and directed by Oscar Winner & Writer of Gosford Park and Downton Abbey Julian Fellowes. Starring the inimitable Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville (both of Downton Abbey), Timothy Spall (Secrets & Lies) and Dominic West (The Wire) comes an engrossing family ghost story. In times of war two centuries apart, two distinct worlds are linked by a single family and the house in which they live. It is 1944 and thirteen year-old Tolly Oldknow (Alex Etel, Cranford) is sent to spend Christmas with his grandmother (Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey), whilst his mother searches for news of his father in wartime London. Spending his days exploring the sprawling ancestral estate, he begins to uncover family secrets and ghosts from the past as he becomes a witness to events during the Napoleonic wars and finds himself slowly drawn into participating in the drama. Invisible to most people in the past, yet able to move amongst them, he begins to unravel the mystery which has bewildered his family for two centuries. The solution to the puzzle leads him into his greatest adventure yet... A wonderful heart-warming story of a young boy learning the value of his family and its history. Review: A Good Film, A Good Story - I got this for some of the cast rather than the film. I was very pleasantly surprised and really got into it and enjoyed it. Definitely worth watching. Review: Lucy M. Boston's 'The Chimneys of Green Knowe' gets the Julian Fellowes Treatment - This is a really lovely film with a cracking cast. The story is a nice mixture of late WW2 reality and 18th century fantasy. The relationship between young Tollie and his grandmother is interesting as it develops from what appears to be polite indifference into something much warmer. The 18th century set ghost/fantasy/family history part of the story makes for an interesting mystery with its intrigues and jealousies, and the treasure hunt in the WW2 present it all leads up to is well done and ties up the two timelines of the story very nicely. The acting is excellent throughout. Apparently writer and director Julian Fellowes wrote the part of the grandmother especially for Maggie Smith, and she does his rather excellent script full justice. Timothy Spall is wonderful as the faithful groundskeeper Boggis and I also like Pauline Colllins (Shirley Valentine, remember?) very much as the cook/housekeeper. Everybody else is equally solid. The atmosphere on the country estate where both parts of the story are set is well captured - for both the WW2 sequences and the period setting a couple centuries earlier. It's the kind of setting Julian Fellowes clearly understands and revels in getting right. I really enjoyed watching the film. Lovely quiet entertainment for the family on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Highly recommended. The DVD has English subtitles for those who may need them. It also includes a conversation with writer/director Julian Fellowes and a trailer by way of extra features.

Interesting
Not a DVD we will watch again, bobbing to & fro between ‘times’ is a bit confusing but excellent quality actors, which is what drew mr to it,

Hammy but eminently watchable
Wooden acting from Alex Etel, you kept asking really annoying questions! In fairness, I think he was miscast by the director and also let down by a weak script for his part. What kept me watching and why I gave this film a three star rating as opposed to one or zero , was the short turn by Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Smith’s character - fine acting from both. I didn’t really like the misty filter which was overly sentimental on the film, surprising really as this director has had final moments.

Stunning sophisticated ghost movie
i didn't read the description properly when buying the dvd, so i was very surprised when i got a ghost movie! It is a very well made movie. it's not scary - except i wasn't expecting ghosts so i jumped out of my skin when the first one appeared. The acting was superb and Maggie Smith was brilliant. The movie is full of well known actors. The story line is lovely and the locations are exquisite. I'm not going to give away the story but it all starts in world war two when a young manchester lad is sent to stay with his granny in the family home in the countryside. He starts asking questions about his ancestors and ensuing tale is fascinating. You'll have to watch the movie to find out more!

What a great, feel good movie. Years ago I came in in the middle of a movie, which turned out to be a wonderful movie. When I started watching From Time to Time, I didn't realize it was the same movie I had watched the end of before. I was thrilled to be able to watch the whole thing. Great story line and wonderful acting. A movie I will watch again and again. Dvd was well packaged and even arrived early.

Everything is not as it appears . . . nor when it appears. A wonderfully enchanting movie about a desperate quest through time, unexpected and welcome connections and a bittersweet reconnection. A bracing journey of discovery, in many different ways. Excellently adapted for the screen from the second instalment of Lucy M. Boston's "Green Knowe" series of novels. Excellent characterisation by the cast and good balance between suspense and relief. Eminently watchable and re-watchable.
