AlcoSense Ultra Fuel Cell Breathalyzer

I recently took a road trip through Europe and brought along the AlcoSense Ultra Breathalyser as a precautionary measure. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I made for the trip. Not only did it ensure my safety, but it also provided me with peace of mind throughout my journey. The device is incredibly easy to use and offers reliable, accurate results in just a few seconds. Whether I was dining out with friends or enjoying a glass of wine at a picturesque vineyard, the AlcoSense Ultra allowed me to confidently monitor my blood alcohol level before getting behind the wheel. It’s expensive but so is your driving license. This is a serious bit of kit and gives a reliable result. I’ve tested it today against known measures of alcohol consumption in units and it is quick and easy to use. I’m not sure about the time to sober estimates (I will have to wait 4 hours) but the drive / don’t drive advice was spot on for 2 units ingested. Full box of spare tubes and really easy to set up and use.

What price for piece of mind particularly 'the morning after'. If, like me, you are a driver who also likes a drink then this is a no brainer. This machine is a handy compact size and so simple to use. Simply slide the machine to the open position, insert a tube and, after a couple of short warning messages which you can skip if you wish, start to blow. The Blow Coach appears in the screen and ensures that you blow at the correct pressure and for the correct amount of time. The result instantly appears. The Ultra certainly isn't the cheapest machine on the market but it is the most accurate in the Alcosense range and has the same fuel cell that the Police use.

I went for the best as the huge sensor made a lot of sense and the high accuracy and police grade sensor was compelling. Plus, I like my tech. This was for the weekend mornings after which I’ve always been a bit worried and wanted to know for sure I was safe to drive. The unit arrived today and had lovely packaging. It was easy to set up and required no calibration- good to go out of the box. I was really curious and started an experiment to measure my BAC. Started at 0.00% and pushed it up to 0.89- make sure you follow the instructions if you are experimenting as you need to leave at least 10 minutes between any alcohol in your mouth and testing. I rinsed my mouth with water after 15 minutes so the sensor wasn’t overloaded. The readings are rapid and there are satisfying cut off and processing noises from the unit. All great and having seen the science, I trust it. My only negative is that this is a premium piece of kit both function and price wise, but it feels plastic and cheap. The action button clunk is harsh and feels low budget. It would have been great to have soft touch buttons and perhaps a bit of silicone on the buttons to make it feel high end. I appreciate the tech and science is superb, I’d just like it to feel a bit more special. That’s the only reason it dropped a star.

Product is very easy to use, I bought this instead of the cheaper models because I wanted the accuracy. This unit comes with the same sensor as the police breathylsers so that gave me confidence that this should work. It certainly does, once you've input the date, time, language and country, you're good to go. You can change the units of measurement to your desire, whether it is blood alcohol or breath alcohol. If you're traveling abroad you can change to that particular countries limits. It's fairly easy to use, just slide the top open, and wait roughly 20 seconds, during that time the unit will give you information regarding when is the best time to test after drinking and how alcohol levels in the body can change over time. This came with 100 blow tubes, and they are individually wrapped, so simply take one out and insert into the blow hole, you don't need much force it gently goes in. The screen tells you blow pressure and volume so you give the best sample possible. The result is given to you almost instantly. If it does read alcohol from your sample it's displayed in your chosen measurements, and a traffic light system will change the colour of the background according to the level found, so green would mean little no alcohol, amber would be significant and to be cautious and red would mean you are over the chosen limit. It also gives you an approximate time of when you are sober, i.e. when the alcohol should've left your system and to retest, you can tell the unit to remind you with a bell icon on the right side of your result which will set an alarm for you to retest. So yes I was very impressed with this breathylser as I drive for a living, it's a nice tool for the next morning to make sure you are all clear, very impressed with the ease of use.

It was quite expensive and doesn't appear to be accurate; I feel it was under reading when we don't feel compentant to drive after a few drinks. Not sure if the one I received has a problem?

Very nicely designed, easy to use and very accurate. This is one sure way to ensure you are safe to drive. Although a bit expensive the accuracy and ease of use more than make up for it - and what is that compared to the cost of losing a license? With this, I can be sure I am safe and legal. Many companies now do random / 100% BAC testing when entering site. Of these many have zero tolerance for abuse. When it comes to the possibility of losing your job the maths suddenly add up. A no brainer.

Nice and easy to use. Useful features include setting different parameters for particular countries and also an indicator for when all the alcohol has left the system. Compact with a good little carry case. Accuracy seems to be good. but only by referencing alcohol units and working out expected results. Haven't done a back to back test. Does burn through batteries and an auto shut down feature after a certain time period would be good to prevent batteries discharging completely if the machine is accidently left turned on.
